This week is a great time to check all your vehicleโ€™s lights before winter sets in. Do these things:

We've all seen people travelling around with one headlight not working (or a rear light not working). In bad weather this reduces how well you can see your surroundings and, importantly, how well other people can see you.

Turn your lights on and get out of your vehicle to check your headlights, brake lights, and 2 sets of position lights (the lights that come on when you turn on your headlights) are working.

You can check your brake lights yourself by reversing close to a wall and looking for the lights' reflection in your rear-view mirror.

Here are 3 ways to use your lights in bad weather:

โ€ข If your wipers are on your headlights should be on (dipped) too.
โ€ข Turn full beam off.
โ€ข Donโ€™t rely on auto lights.

When it's raining: Turn your headlights on dipped when itโ€™s raining. Many of us have silver, grey, or white vehicles which easily blend into the road, grey sky, and water spray. Having your headlights on dipped activates your rear position lights. Together your lights make you much more visible to people behind you and people coming towards you.

Don't use full beam: Itโ€™s illegal to use full beam around other people. Your headlights must be dipped, even in heavy rain. Practically, that means you should only consider using full beam when you're not around other people and youโ€™re driving on an unlit or poorly-lit road.

Don't rely on auto lights: Turn your lights on manually in bad weather. Newer vehicles have auto lights that turn on when it's dark, but youโ€™ll often need to manually turn the headlights on in dim conditions during the day. The automatic function often doesn't activate during daytime, even when visibility is low.

This week is a great time to check your tyre tread on all your vehicleโ€™s tyres (and any spares) before winter sets in.

You should regularly check your tyres to make sure you have plenty of tread. The minimum legal depth is 1.5 millimetres, but the more tread you have the better the grip and the safer you'll be.

Tread is vital to giving you grip on a wet road. The tread in your tyres moves water on the road as you drive through the water. The less tread you have, the less water the tyre can move, and the more likely you are to aquaplane (lose grip on the wet road and be unable to steer or brake).

Use a tyre tread depth checker or go to a garage and get them to check your tread depth.

You can also look for tread depth indicators in the tyreโ€™s grooves โ€“ these usually look like little raised squares or rectangles in the groove. The indicators are at 1.5 millimetres. Itโ€™s time to change the tyre if itโ€™s worn to the level of the indicator.

Keep your tyres inflated at the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Tyres naturally lose a little air pressure over time so it's worth checking them monthly. Remember to check any spares as well.
