It's stating the obvious, but you must make space for emergency vehicles that have their sirens or lights on.

If an emergency vehicle is heading in your direction on a road with multiple lanes in the same direction, slow down and get into the left-most lane, then move as far left as is safe. This'll let the emergency vehicle pass you using the lane to your right.

If traffic is congested, and you’re in the right-most lane, pull over as far to the right as possible. This’ll create a gap in the middle for the emergency vehicle.

Emergency vehicle drivers are trained to navigate around traffic, so you slowing and stopping safely, and being predictable, will help them pass you safely.

One emergency vehicle can be followed by another, so wait, check your mirrors, and only continue when it’s safe.

It's the law: You can only use your vehicle's fog lights when visibility is severely reduced, such as in fog or snow.

You can't use your fog lights when the weather is clear, even at night. The law is very clear on this.

It's important your fog lights are off in clear conditions because they produce a very intense light that can distract or dazzle people around you. This is especially true of rear-facing fog lights. Some vehicles have fog lights at the back, alongside or below the brake lights, and these can be even more disruptive than forward-facing fog lights.

Be prepared to use your vehicle's fog lights if you're travelling through fog or snow – but remember you must turn your fog lights off as soon as you're out of the fog or snow.

What's the quickest way to clear a foggy windscreen?

Who has the right of way here?

If you’re getting ready to travel and your windscreen is foggy, here’s the fastest way to clear it:

• Turn your demister on.
• Turn your air conditioning to full strength at its hottest temperature.
• Turn circulating air off.
• Open the windows by a few centimetres, even if only for 20–30 seconds.

You should turn circulating air off because cold air from outside will clear fog faster than recirculated air in your car, which is already hot and has already absorbed some condensation.

In other words, cold and dry air is better than warm and moist air.

The circulating air symbol looks like a car with a U-shaped arrow in it – turn it off.

Opening the windows just a little will help clear the humid air inside, replacing it with colder air from outside. This speeds up the process a bit but it's a nice-to-have – sometimes it'll be raining, or just really cold outside.

If you’re not sure what your demister looks like, its symbol looks like three arrows pointing up at a curved rectangle. In most modern vehicles this symbol will be on a button you can turn on or off, but in older vehicles it may be a setting you need to select using a dial.

We've all seen people driving around with a foggy windscreen, and with foggy windows too. It's illegal to drive with a foggy windscreen (under section 8.8 of the Land Transport (Road User) Rule), so clear your windscreen and keep it clear as you’re travelling.
