Some roads you add to the itinerary. Nevis Road is the one you plan the whole day around.
It crosses the high country between Bannockburn and Garston and peaks at around 1,300 m on Duffers Saddle, the highest public road in New Zealand. It’s unsealed, remote, with no fuel or phone coverage, and the weather up there turns fast. That’s proper 4WD country 🏔️🚙
Good to know: the road is closed to vehicles over winter (early June to 30 September) and is a dry-weather route the rest of the year.
Check Central Otago District Council’s road closures before you go, take water and snacks, and the climb from Bannockburn to Duffers Saddle is the classic run.
Wherever your New Zealand road trip begins, we’ll have the right 4WD waiting. Link in bio ✨
