We'd like to acknowledge our awesome North Canterbury community.

About 5.30 last night it was cold and wet, so we'd pretty much decided to pull the pin until we got a call from the AA asking us to pick up a Toyota Surf that had broken down in the Ravenswood New World car park....

Yes, Surfs do break down — just not very often.

As you can imagine, it was really busy with people stopping in on their way home and the vehicle was in an awkward spot which meant having a tow truck in the middle of a busy car park was definitely a pain in the proverbial.

And I would have completely understood if people got a bit grumpy while I loaded it.

Only they didn’t.

It was amazing, everyone was patient, kind, and understanding - people smiled, waved, offered help, and people waited calmly in their cars while I got the car loaded and tied down safely.

I reckon that says a lot about our community.

Thank you, Ravenswood and North Canterbury. Your patience made a tricky job much easier and may your Matariki be amazing.

**A friendly towing tip from the Ashley’s team: don’t forget the key! 🔑**

If you’ve broken down and need to leave your car, please try to leave the key with it if it’s safe to do so.

You’d be amazed how often we arrange to pick up a vehicle… only to find the key is still in someone’s pocket, handbag, workshop, mate’s ute, or “somewhere safe.”

Having the key can make a big difference. It helps us:

✅ Unlock the steering
✅ Release the handbrake
✅ Get the vehicle into neutral
✅ Turn off alarms
✅ Steer and load the vehicle safely

Without the key, even a simple tow can quickly become a much bigger mission.

If you can’t stay with the vehicle, think about whether there’s a safe option:

🔑 Is there somewhere discreet on the vehicle where the key can be left?
🔑 Is there a nearby business, service station, or workshop that can hold it?
🔑 Is there someone local who can meet us with the key?

And if you do leave the key somewhere, please send us a photo or clear instructions — because “under the thing beside the other thing” gets surprisingly confusing in the dark or rain.

A small magnetic key holder can be a handy thing to keep for emergencies too. They’re cheap, simple, and can save a lot of hassle when things go wrong.

How often have you looked at a car (or remembered something you used to own) and asked yourself "I wonder how many of these are left?".

HOW MANY LEFT NZ...is a website we got to know about recently. The basics are that you can search any car make/model and it will tell you how many are left registered on NZ roads. We havent tried it yet but whats great is that this service is entirely free, so worth checking out guys. Click on the link in the comments.
