It is with great sadness - we acknowledge of the passing of Kīngi Tuheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII, the Māori King. We mourn the loss of a humble leader who was dedicated to the advancement of New Zealanders, Māori, Pacific & indigenous peoples worldwide. Kīngi Tuheitia was not only a symbol of kotahitanga, unity and resilience for Māori, but an advocate of all New Zealanders growing together. His leadership, wisdom and commitment will leave a significant mark in our history and for future generations.

We offer our sincere condolences and aroha to the Kīngitanga, the Kāhui Ariki and Tainui at this time. With much sadness of his passing, we celebrate his leadership and legacy he has left on our nation. Moe mai ra e te Rangatira.

Take extra care when driving in cold temperatures. Colder weather means the roads can be icy, and roads can still be slippery even when it gets warmer.

Adjust your driving to reduce the risk of sliding – slow down, increase your following distance, and avoid sudden braking or turning.

Before you set off, enter your destination into our website for real-time travel info showing delays and road closures you may experience along your journey: https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz

Driver licence test fees are changing from 8 July 2024. The application fee for sitting a car licence test will cover two tests – if you need a third test or more you'll have to pay for each time you sit the test.

There’s very high demand for tests, and wait times have been made longer by many people sitting their test without being prepared and taking several attempts before they pass. This change will encourage people to be well-prepared before booking a test.

People applying to convert their overseas licence to a New Zealand car licence will pay an application fee and a fee for each test.

Our website has more information on the change and resit fees: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/test-fee-changes

With temperatures now dropping below 0ºC overnight, you'll need to take extra care when you're driving – especially over bridges.

Bridges cool down more quickly than a normal section of road. That makes it easier for ice to form and take longer to melt away. A bridge may be slippery even if the road either side of the bridge isn’t slippery.

Slow down and avoid sudden braking when you’re approaching a bridge on days where the temperature has been at or below 0ºC. Reducing your speed will reduce the likelihood of your vehicle sliding on the bridge if the bridge is icy or otherwise slippery.

Roadworkers will be out early each day during winter to assess state highways. Where needed they’ll put grit on the road to give you more grip, or they’ll put de-icing agents on the road to help remove the ice.

Take care if you see roadworkers out in the early morning – it’s likely the road ahead of them hasn’t been treated yet, so be careful if you pass them.
