KAMBYO'S SATURDAY TIP:
12 PRACTICAL TIPS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A USED-CAR:
1.) Set a realistic budget. Include not only the purchase price but also registration, insurance, maintenance, and possible repairs.
2.) Check the vehicle’s history. Ask about previous ownership, accident history, flood exposure, major repairs, and maintenance records.
3.) Verify the documents. Check the original OR/CR, chassis and engine numbers, registered owner details, and make sure there are no unresolved legal or financing issues.
4.) Inspect the exterior carefully. Look for uneven paint, dents, rust, inconsistent panel gaps, or signs of previous collision repairs.
5.) Inspect the interior. Excessive wear on the seats, steering wheel, pedals, and controls can sometimes indicate heavier usage than the odometer suggests.
6.) Check the engine and mechanical condition. Watch for unusual noises, smoke, leaks, overheating, warning lights, or irregular engine performance.
7.) Check the tires, brakes, suspension, and underchassis. These components can reveal how well the vehicle was maintained and whether additional expenses may be coming.
8.) Verify the mileage. Compare the odometer reading with the vehicle's age, service history, and overall physical condition.
9.) Always test-drive the vehicle. Check acceleration, braking, steering, transmission shifting, air-conditioning, suspension, and unusual vibrations or noises.
10.) Have a trusted mechanic inspect it. A professional inspection can identify problems that may not be obvious during a normal viewing.
11.) Compare market prices. A vehicle priced unusually low may have hidden mechanical, documentation, or ownership issues.
12.) Choose a trustworthy seller. A reputable used-car dealer or seller should be transparent about the vehicle's condition and willing to answer questions.
Golden Rule
Don't simply buy the cheapest used car. Buy the vehicle that offers the best combination of condition, reliability, documentation, and value for your money.
