“There’s no reason to stop dreaming if you really want to be successful.”
Eleven years after a photo showed him studying under the lights of a McDonald’s in Mandaue City, Daniel Cabrera is back at the same place, not as the nine-year-old boy doing homework outside, but as a 20-year-old working student continuing his education.
In June 2015, Daniel was a Grade 3 student at Subangdaku Elementary School when Cebu Doctors’ University student Joyce Torrefranca photographed him studying outside the McDonald’s North Reclamation Area.
Behind that image was a difficult reality.
After a fire destroyed their home, Daniel and his family stayed around a nearby pungko-pungko stall. Without electricity there, he would go near the restaurant at night and use its exterior lights to read and complete his schoolwork.
The photograph spread across social media and eventually reached audiences around the world.
Support soon followed.
McDonald’s Philippines granted Daniel a scholarship covering his K–12 basic education and provided a monthly allowance for his school requirements. Other individuals and groups also extended school supplies, financial assistance, and other forms of support.
But Daniel still had to do the studying himself.
In 2019, he completed elementary school. Years later, he finished high school with honors, McDonald’s Philippines confirmed.
Now 20, Daniel is pursuing Hospitality Management at Benedicto College while working as a service crew member at the same McDonald’s branch where he once studied outside.
He now balances his work shifts with classes while remaining focused on finishing college and helping his family move beyond the hardships they experienced when he was younger.
Daniel also told SunStar Cebu that his childhood ambition of entering law enforcement remains part of his plans, while Hospitality Management gives him another career path to pursue.
Eleven years ago, Daniel sat outside a restaurant searching for enough light to finish his homework.
Today, he works inside that same restaurant while continuing the education he once fought so hard to pursue.
The place may be the same, but the young boy under the light has come a long way, and his story is still being written. 💡🎓
