Not every large SUV is suitable for armouring.
Armour adds significant weight, which affects the vehicle’s suspension, braking, handling, and overall performance. That’s why choosing the right base vehicle matters just as much as choosing the protection level.
In this video, our expert shares three of the most suitable SUVs for armouring and explains where each one performs best.
The right choice depends on your threat level, travel routes, and daily use.

Most buyers focus on armour thickness and protection level. But real protection goes much deeper.
Run-flat tyres aren’t bulletproof. Armour affects the vehicle’s braking, suspension, handling, and reliability. And choosing the highest protection level isn’t always the right decision.

A properly armoured vehicle balances protection, mobility, and long-term performance based on the actual threat and operating conditions.

One of the first questions clients ask inside an armoured vehicle is, “Will the windows still open?”

It’s a fair question in Pakistan, where toll plazas, security checkpoints, and entry gates are part of everyday travel.

The answer is yes, an armoured window can be designed to open. But the decision isn’t as simple as installing a stronger window motor.

Ballistic glass is thicker and considerably heavier than standard automotive glass. The original lifting mechanism may not be designed to move that weight repeatedly or hold it securely over time.

The more important issue is protection. The glass, door frame, reinforced body, and ballistic overlaps must work together as one system. Once the glass moves, that system becomes more complex. Alignment, protected edges, supporting mechanisms, and long-term reliability all need to be considered.

Depending on the vehicle and its purpose, the driver’s window may be designed to open partially for identification, communication, or toll payments. In other applications, fixed glass may be the more dependable choice.

Neither option is automatically better.

An operable window isn’t necessarily a sign of more advanced armouring. A fixed window doesn’t necessarily mean the manufacturer has taken a shortcut. The correct choice depends on the threat level, vehicle design, operating route, and client’s requirements.

This is a decision that should be made before the armouring process begins, not after the glass has been installed.

Good armouring doesn’t preserve every factory feature without question.

It decides which features can be retained without compromising protection or reliability.

Would you prefer the convenience of a partially opening window or the simplicity of a fixed one?

The Land Cruiser didn’t become an armouring favourite because of its badge.
It earned that position over more than seven decades of demanding use.
The story began with the Toyota BJ in 1951. The 40 and 70 Series established a reputation for toughness, simple engineering, and dependable performance in difficult environments.

The 80 and 100 Series introduced greater space, comfort, and refinement. This made the Land Cruiser suitable not only for field operations, but also for executive and long-distance movement.

The 200 and 300 Series took that balance further with more capable powertrains, improved safety, and modern technology.
This evolution explains why the Land Cruiser remains one of the first platforms considered for armouring. Its frame-based construction, spacious body, capability, and upgrade potential provide a strong foundation for protected mobility.
But the badge alone isn’t enough.

Once ballistic steel and glass are added, the suspension, brakes, tyres, hinges, weight distribution, and electronic systems must all be engineered around the additional load.

The Land Cruiser provides the foundation. The quality of the armouring determines how safely and reliably it performs afterwards.

If you ask me to armour a Suzuki Alto, I won’t begin by measuring its doors.
I’ll begin with the weight the car was designed to carry.

According to Pak Suzuki’s published specifications, the Alto has a kerb weight of approximately 650 to 670 kg and a gross vehicle weight of 1,050 kg.

In simple terms, that leaves only around 380 to 400 kg for the driver, passengers, luggage, accessories, and every modification added to the vehicle.

Now consider what proper armouring requires. Ballistic glass, protective materials, reinforced doors, ballistic overlaps, hinges, and supporting components all add considerable weight. The vehicle must then accelerate, brake, steer, and remain stable while carrying that additional load.
The Alto’s 660cc engine, suspension, brakes, tyres, transmission, and body structure were designed for lightweight city use. They weren’t engineered to carry a full ballistic protection package.

Could protective material physically be installed in one? To some extent, yes.
But placing steel and ballistic glass inside a car doesn’t automatically make it a properly engineered armoured vehicle.

I need to know whether the completed vehicle can carry the weight, stop safely, remain stable, and continue performing reliably. If it can’t do all four, I wouldn’t recommend it as an armouring platform.

The Alto is a practical car for the purpose it was built to serve. Meaningful full-vehicle ballistic protection simply falls outside that purpose.

Good armouring begins with respecting the limits of the base vehicle, even when that means recommending a different platform.

An armoured vehicle can protect the people inside.
But it can’t make every decision for the person behind the wheel.
Many buyers invest in ballistic steel, glass, run-flat tyres, and supporting upgrades, then hand over the keys without preparing the driver for how the vehicle has changed.

An armoured SUV doesn’t behave exactly like the standard vehicle that left the factory.
The added weight can affect acceleration, braking distance, turning, and overall handling. A driver who understands these changes can control the vehicle more confidently. A driver who doesn’t may place unnecessary stress on the vehicle and its passengers.

This matters on Pakistani roads, where traffic can stop without warning, motorcycles appear from unexpected directions, and road conditions can change quickly between cities, motorways, and remote project sites.

Driver training isn’t about driving aggressively or at high speed. It is about awareness, control, and preparation. The driver should understand how much distance the vehicle needs to stop, how it responds during sudden movement, and how to maintain control without making abrupt decisions. Regular checks of the tyres, brakes, suspension, fuel level, and warning lights should also become part of the routine.

For executive and security movement, route planning and communication matter just as much. A good driver knows the primary route, possible alternatives, expected road conditions, and the limitations of the vehicle.
The safest response is often the problem that was noticed early and avoided altogether.

Ballistic protection creates a secure structure around the passengers.
A trained driver keeps that structure moving safely.
When both work together, the vehicle becomes a complete protection system rather than simply an SUV carrying armour.

Is professional driver preparation part of your armoured vehicle plan?

If the glass cracks after a bullet impact, did it fail?

Not always.

Bulletproof glass is not just thick glass. It is a layered ballistic system designed to absorb and spread the impact energy of a bullet, helping stop it from entering the cabin.

Cracks can appear after impact, but cracking and pe*******on are two very different things. What matters is tested protection, proper installation, and choosing the right ballistic glass for your threat level.

A used SUV can be armoured.
But a clean body and low mileage don’t tell us whether it should be.
This is a common question in Pakistan, especially from owners of used Land Cruisers, , , and models.
The answer depends less on the vehicle’s age and more on its actual condition.

Armouring adds substantial weight to the vehicle. If the base SUV already has a weak chassis, worn suspension, poor brakes, or hidden accident damage, that additional weight can make existing problems worse.

That is why a complete inspection should come before the armouring quotation.

The chassis must be checked for damage, corrosion, cracks, and previous welding. The suspension, steering, brakes, engine, and transmission must also be assessed. Even uneven door alignment can indicate repairs that deserve a closer look.

Previous accident damage is especially important.

An SUV may look perfectly restored from the outside, but structural repairs underneath can affect how safely it carries an armouring package. Cosmetic condition and structural condition aren’t always the same.

Parts availability also matters. A protected vehicle must remain dependable. If its mechanical or suspension components are difficult to source in Pakistan, future downtime can become a serious concern.

This doesn’t mean every older SUV is unsuitable.

A well-maintained older Land Cruiser with a clean structure and proper service history may be a better armouring platform than a newer SUV with hidden damage and neglected maintenance.

The model year gives us a starting point.
The inspection gives us the real answer.
Before investing in ballistic steel and glass, make sure the vehicle underneath them is strong enough to carry the responsibility.

Would you armour a carefully maintained used SUV, or begin with a new vehicle?
