"Winter package" at an airport rental counter usually means a scraper in the glovebox and whatever tires came on the car. Those are all-seasons. All-seasons are rated for cold pavement, not for the Schweitzer road at 7am after six inches overnight.

Look for this symbol on the sidewall: a mountain with a snowflake inside it. That's the 3-peak rating, and it means the tire was actually tested in snow. Every vehicle in our fleet runs them October through April. It's the single biggest difference between a car that gets you to the hill and a car that gets you a tow.

The one on the ski list people don't expect: the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.
