Training day. Smokey is teaching Oliver cylinder head inspection: check for cracks, check for warping, check the water passages for corrosion, and make sure the spark plug threads are clean and true. Oliver is mostly checking whether a head gasket is edible.

He'll learn. She did — twenty years of watching parts leave this shop will do that.

Every cylinder head we list gets looked over the same way, minus the cat hair. Clean sealing surface, good plug threads, honest photos.

Smokey is on it. Literally. She claimed the pile before we finished unloading, and nothing gets past her without a thorough sniff test. Don't worry, Sharon was there to do the rest of the testing.

Oliver is the youngest member of the crew. His duties include chasing Smokey, knocking things off benches, and being loud at exactly the wrong moment.

Smokey runs quality control on the parts side. She's napped on more carburetors than most mechanics have rebuilt.

If your motor spent the fall coughing and dying at idle, that's a carb full of varnish — not a motor giving up. We've got shelves of used OEM carbs, pulled, cleaned, and checked. Smokey has yet to approve a leaky float bowl.

Zombie. It died, but you keep making it walk.
Mummy. Duct tape. You're halfway there already.

Scariest of all: "Boat That Runs." Nobody will recognize it.

Outboard yearbook, Class of This Season:

Most Likely to Quit at the Ramp: the carburetors.
Most Likely to Get Blamed: the stator.
Class Clown: the kill switch lanyard nobody clipped.
Best Looking: the prop, back in May.
Most Changed: the prop, by August.
Biggest Flirt: the trim, up and down all day and going nowhere.
Most Likely to Succeed: a lower unit that's been pressure tested, inspected, and resealed.

That last one we can help with. Most of the others too.
