The road that starts in our backyard has a better story than most highways get.

The Apache Trail, State Route 88, became a wagon road in 1904. Its whole reason for existing was hauling supplies out to build Roosevelt Dam. Crews carved it through the Superstitions using mostly hand tools. It was graded to a single lane, twelve feet wide, in 1915. Gravel and a widening to sixteen feet came in 1936. It was also one of the original ten state highways Arizona designated back in 1927.

Next time you head out past Apache Junction toward Roosevelt Lake, remember what it took to put that road there.

Dumb Motorist Law of the day, and this one is real.

In about a dozen states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maine, car dealerships are legally required to stay closed on Sundays.

You literally cannot buy a car that day.

Arizona has no such rule. You can buy and title a car any day of the week here.

True, but only after a complete stop, yielding to pedestrians and cross traffic, and only where there is no no turn on red sign. A rolling stop still counts as a violation.

They are not just random road sparkle.

In many areas, blue raised pavement markers help firefighters quickly identify fire hydrant locations, especially at night.

It is one of those small road details most people drive past without thinking about.

In Oregon, leaving your car door open too long is an actual traffic violation under ORS 811.490.
