One of the biggest concerns Mercedes owners have when scheduling service is figuring out how they're going to get through the day without their vehicle.

On July 3, 1886, people in Mannheim, Germany, got their first look at something that would change transportation forever.

While Carl Benz received the patent for his Patent Motorwagen earlier that year, it was on this day that the vehicle made its first public driving demonstration. Local newspapers covered the event extensively, introducing the world to what many called a "horseless carriage."

It's hard to imagine now, but every Mercedes-Benz on the road today can trace its roots back to that moment. From a three-wheeled motorized carriage to the engineering and performance we know today, it all started with one public drive through the streets of Mannheim.

Mercedes-Benz history is filled with milestones, and this is one of the moments that truly started it all.
