That light blue layer at the top is gas and the rest underneath is water

28 horsepower Johnson that had a severe exhaust leak that would choke the engine out when the top cowling was on. This was diagnosed as a bad base gasket so I removed the engine to make the necessary repairs and now it operates as it should!

A quick favor from my customers:

If I’ve worked on your boat, jet ski, ATV, snowmobile, motorcycle, or other equipment and you were happy with the service, I’d really appreciate you taking a minute to leave a review.

Reviews help small businesses grow and help other customers know they’re bringing their equipment to someone they can trust.

🔧 Everything can be fixed, but some things just aren’t worth fixing in the customer’s eyes.

This Polaris 650 came in with a simple complaint: no crank.

While talking with the owner during drop-off, I found the air box above the carburetor full of acorns which required further inspection. During my inspection, I found the carburetor throats full of water. On a two-stroke engine, that’s a major red flag because any water that makes it past the carbs ends up in the crankcase.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened here.

What started as a no-crank diagnosis quickly turned into the discovery of an engine that had taken on water internally. At that point, the repair becomes much more involved than simply getting the engine to turn over. Corrosion, damaged bearings, and internal engine damage all become concerns.

Could it be repaired? Yes. But after discussing the findings and the potential cost of repairs, the owner decided it wasn’t worth pursuing.

Not every machine that comes through the door gets repaired, but every customer deserves an honest diagnosis and a clear picture of what they’re dealing with before spending money.

Sometimes the most valuable service a shop can provide is helping someone avoid sinking more money into a machine that doesn’t make financial sense to save.

😬 Water in the carbs. Water in the crankcase. Never a good day for a two-stroke.

Big news for Sea-Doo, Ski-Doo, Can-Am, and BRP owners!

Drew’s Marine and Powersport now has BUDS diagnostic capabilities.

This allows me to perform many dealer-level functions including reading and clearing fault codes, viewing live data, performing calibrations, programming certain components, key programming, and assisting with diagnostics that previously required a trip to the dealer.

Whether you have a check engine light, fault code, performance issue, or recently replaced a component that requires programming or calibration, I may be able to help.

If you’re not sure whether your machine needs BUDS diagnostics, send me a message with the year, make, model, and issue you’re experiencing.

Quick turnaround job this morning. This beautiful 2008 Larson with a 5.0L Volvo Penta came to me with a no-start condition. After a quick diagnosis, the issue was traced to a heavily corroded distributor cap and rotor. Replaced both components and it’s now ready for the season. 👌

A lot of people don’t realize what’s actually happening inside a distributor cap, so here’s a quick explanation of something called “spark jump.” ⚡

Spark jump is when the ignition spark jumps through the small air gap inside the distributor cap from the spinning rotor to the correct terminal post for each cylinder.

When corrosion, moisture, cracks, or carbon tracking develop inside the cap, the spark can jump to the wrong terminal instead. When that happens, the engine may sound like it wants to start but never fully fires. You’ll often hear little “pffft” noises through the intake or exhaust, uneven cranking, popping, or even backfiring because the cylinders are firing at the wrong time.

Sometimes a simple ignition issue like this is all that stands between a no-start and a boat that’s ready to hit the water again.
