During the 2026 RROC National Meet we met new friends Mike & Ash and were reunited with an old friend. They acquired a very special Phantom II, Hiram, which will always hold a special place with us. This car is still carrying the restoration our founder, Butch Sr. carried out in the late 1970s into the very early 1980s while working for John McCombe. This was long before opening our family business in 1984. This car marks the first Phantom II restoration of many more to come while working with his son Butch Jr. and later his grandson Andrew. We last saw the car 26 years ago.

245AJS has been well taken care of over the years and was a joy not only to be seen again but to have the opportunity to be behind the wheel. We are glad to see Hiram has found a great home. We look forward to seeing him in the future.

Included are pictures of Hiram at this show along with photos of his first show in 1981, the RROC Nat'l Meet in 1988 (parked beside 60GX, the first PII Restoration by our company), among a few shop photos from 1995.

One of the most overlooked items pertaining to the cooling system is the function of the steam valve. Rolls-Royce introduced them in 1931. These cars are nearing 100 years old and some have had changes during their life with replacement parts. It is important to ensure it functions correctly. Original steam valves only supply a few pounds pressure.

Pictured below are PII radiator caps with new copper sealing rings fitted, and an overhauled steam valve.

When investigating your steam valve, be sure to verify your cap is fitted with a correct copper sealing ring and NOT a rubber washer. A positive and consistent position when tightening the cap is vital.

Note: when depressing the steam valve by your hand, the brass sealing plate needs to lift above the lower sealing surface of the copper sealing ring. Without this ability, pressure may not be able to escape.

We will be hosting the Phantom II technical seminar (on behalf of the PII Society) at the RROC National Meet in Palm Springs, CA next month. The seminar is on Wed May 6th.

The seminar will cover making sense of the quadrant controls (ignition advance, fuel mixture, governor) and under what circumstances is it necessary to change their settings, problems arising from incorrect settings, starting and driving, basic trouble shooting techniques, along with a question and answer forum. There will be a quick reference guide (v 2.0) given out covering these topics.

There will be a limited number of PII Society car badges available. The original group of badges sold out quickly long ago. Recently, the Society has made a second run of badges (as pictured below), grab yours before they are gone.
