Job description: Automotive Service Writer
About us:
Johnnie's 66 is a small, family-owned business that has proudly serviced the local community of Dodge County and surrounding areas since 1958. Located in the heart of Beaver Dam, WI, this hybrid gas station offers an array of automotive services including but not limited to full and self-service fuel, automotive repairs, 24-hour towing, and seasonal snow retrieval services. We are professional, established, customer-centric and our goal is to strengthen our team and continue to contribute to the local community by delivering excellent customer care.
We are looking for a motivated automotive service writer to serve as the liaison between a technician team and customers. Duties of the automotive service writer ensure that customers receive the best possible service and that technicians can focus on making necessary repairs. Given automotive service writers play a major role in determining customer satisfaction, the following responsibilities are utilized to deliver the best possible experience for a customer:
- Promptly greeting customers who walk into the shop
- Listening to customers describe auto problems
- Asking follow-up questions to help diagnose issues
- Entering customer information into a database
- Tracking the progress of each job
- Compiling work estimates and communicating them to the customer
- Answering customers’ questions regarding the nature of repairs and their costs
- Billing the customer or accepting payment when the job is complete
The ideal candidate should have general knowledge of automobiles and a good customer service background. Some common attributes that set candidates up for success in automotive service writer careers include:
- Strong listening skills to gather information from customers
- Effective interviewing skills to ask follow-up questions
- Adequate knowledge of automobiles to gather information and discuss vehicles with authority
- Verbal communication skills to explain complex technical problems in simple terms
- Familiarity with database software used for entering customer information
- Arithmetic ability to calculate the total cost of parts and labor when creating estimates
- Organizational skills to keep track of multiple jobs and manage estimates and other paperwork
