Crosley COBRA: The Ingenious 'Sheet Metal' Engine

In the post-WWII era, Crosley Motors introduced a groundbreaking innovation: the COBRA engine. Originally developed by engineer Lloyd M. Taylor in 1937, this engine utilized a unique copper brazing technique to assemble its sheet metal components, resulting in a lightweight and efficient powerplant.

Weighing just 133 lbs and producing 26.5 horsepower, the COBRA engine was a marvel of engineering, especially suited for Crosley's compact vehicles like the Hotshot sports car. Its design featured a single overhead camshaft and a unitized block and head, eliminating the need for a head gasket.

However, the engine's innovative construction led to unforeseen issues. The sheet metal's susceptibility to corrosion, particularly in the cooling jackets, became problematic due to the antifreeze formulations of the time. This led Crosley to transition to the more durable Cast Iron Block Assembly (CIBA) engine in 1949.

Despite its short production run, the COBRA engine remains a testament to Crosley's commitment to innovation and lightweight design. Its legacy lives on among enthusiasts and in the annals of automotive history.
