There was a time at the Great American when making it to the top wasn’t the only challenge… you first had to survive “The Wall.”

From 1996 to 2006, The Wall became one of the most infamous sections in Great American Hillclimb history. It wasn’t just steep—it was brutal. Riders launched into it at full speed, only to be met with a near-vertical obstacle that could end a run in an instant. Spectacular saves were rare. Violent crashes were not.

The Wall created unforgettable moments and legendary stories, but it also proved to be one of the most dangerous features ever built on the hill. After years of punishing both riders and machines, it was retired in the interest of rider safety.

In this video Mel Kimball was the only rider to summit in 2002!

Today, The Wall lives on in Great American lore—a section respected by everyone who raced it and feared by everyone who stood at the bottom watching.

If you were there between 1996 and 2006, you know exactly what we’re talking about.

What’s your favorite memory of The Wall? Share your photos, videos, or stories in the comments and help keep this legendary piece of Great American history alive.

DP3 MX Track Report:
The back section is hard, smooth and finely watered. The front half still has some braking bumps but still some good water. It's gonna be a hot one today. I'd get some practice in before this dries out

108 YEARS. THREE HILLS. ONE LEGEND. 🇺🇸🏁

The Great American Championship Hillclimb has challenged riders for 108 years… but did you know it’s only been held on three different hills?

🏔️ Hill #1 (1918 – ~1933)
The original Great American hill sat just to the right of the current entrance to the Billings Motorcycle Club. This is where the legend began.

🏔️ Hill #2 (~1933 – 1980s)
The event then moved to what is now known as Trophy Hill. Many longtime fans still call it the “Old State Hill” or simply “The X Hill.” Countless champions etched their names into history on this iconic slope.

🏔️ Hill #3 (1980s– Present)
Our current hill was untouched until 1997, when the transformation began. Year after year, dirt was added, reshaping it into the monster we know today. Since 1999, the hill has grown by roughly 80 feet, creating the intimidating climb that continues to test the world’s best hillclimbers.

From the first pioneers in 1918 to today’s fearless riders, one thing has never changed—the Great American continues to evolve while honoring the history that made it legendary.

Some riders win races…

Legends create stories that never die.

Dusty Beer wasn’t just fast—he was fearless.

One of the most iconic moments in Great American Hillclimb history? Watching Dusty launch through the chute like gravity didn’t exist.

And the legend goes… he broke his leg, wrapped it up with duct tape, lined back up, and still conquered the hill to become King of the Hill.

That’s the kind of grit that built the legacy of the Great American Championship Hillclimb.

Whether every detail has grown with the telling or not, one thing is certain: Dusty Beer earned his place among the all-time greats.

Who’s got another unforgettable Great American story?
