Just a 1% increase in speed can heighten your fatality risk as much as 12%.

MYTH: “Speeding saves a lot of time.”

REALITY: Most drivers overestimate how much time they actually save.

According to a study by AAA Colorado, driving 80 mph instead of 75 mph would require traveling 100 miles just to save about 5 minutes.

For the average driver? Speeding only saves about 26 seconds per day.

Meanwhile, speeding reduces reaction time and increases crash severity, especially for new drivers.

💡 Slow down. Arrive safely. Colorado lost more than 1,200 lives to speeding between 2021 and 2025. Those few extra seconds aren’t worth the risk.

Questions about teens and e-bikes?

Here are your answers from Sgt. Cabot:

In Colorado, youth under 16 are prohibited from operating Class 3 e-bikes (which assist up to 28 mph) but can legally ride Class 1 and 2 e-bikes of any age.

Riders under 18 must wear a helmet on Class 3 bikes, and parents can face legal penalties if minors ride illegal e-motorbikes or violate traffic laws.

Colorado E-Bike Classifications:

Colorado law divides e-bikes into three specific classes, which dictate where and how they can be ridden:

Class 1: Pedal-assist only, with a motor that stops helping at 20 mph.

Class 2: Throttle-assisted, with a motor that stops helping at 20 mph.

Class 3: Pedal-assist only, with a motor that stops helping at 28 mph.
