Before winter settles in, it's a good time to check the fluids that help your vehicle run safely and reliably. Cold weather can expose problems that were easy to overlook during warmer months.

Here's what deserves a look before temperatures drop.

🛢️ ENGINE OIL

Oil helps protect your engine from wear. Check your oil level and make sure your next oil change is up to date. Always use the oil grade recommended for your vehicle.

🧊 COOLANT / ANTIFREEZE

Your cooling system needs the correct coolant mixture to protect against freezing and overheating. If the level keeps dropping, don't just keep topping it off. Have the cause checked.

🪟 WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID

Winter washer fluid helps remove road salt, slush and grime. Make sure your reservoir is full and your wipers are in good shape. Summer fluid may freeze when temperatures fall.

🛑 BRAKE FLUID

Brake fluid plays a key role in stopping your vehicle. If it's low or due for service, have it checked. Low fluid can also point to a leak or brake wear.

Your vehicle's heater does more than keep you warm. Your defroster helps keep your windows clear so you can see where you're going.

Here are a few things worth checking before the really cold weather arrives.

🔥 IS YOUR HEATER BLOWING WARM AIR?

If your car takes too long to warm up or the air never gets very warm, there could be a problem with the thermostat, coolant level or heater core.

💨 IS YOUR BLOWER FAN WORKING?

Weak airflow or a fan that only works on certain speeds could point to a blower motor, resistor or clogged cabin air filter.

🪟 ARE YOUR WINDOWS CLEARING PROPERLY?

Your front and rear defrosters need to work when frost, fog and freezing temperatures arrive. If your windshield keeps fogging up or won't clear, don't ignore it.

👃 SMELL SOMETHING SWEET INSIDE THE CAR?

A sweet antifreeze smell, damp carpet or windows fogging on the inside can be signs of a leaking heater core. These symptoms can have other causes, too, so it's worth having them checked.

🥶 FALL MAINTENANCE #5: YOUR COOLING SYSTEM

Boyertown winters can be tough on your vehicle. Don't forget about the system that keeps your engine at the right temperature.

When most people think about a cooling system, they think about overheating in the summer.

But your cooling system matters in cold weather too.

And a problem that starts with a low coolant level, an old hose or a small leak can eventually turn into a much bigger repair.

Here are some things Boyertown drivers should watch for:

💧 CHECK YOUR COOLANT LEVEL

Low coolant can lead to overheating, poor cabin heat and other problems. If you keep adding coolant, don't just keep topping it off. Find out where it's going.

🧪 WHEN WAS YOUR LAST COOLANT FLUSH?

Antifreeze doesn't last forever. Coolant breaks down over time and the correct service interval depends on your vehicle and the type of coolant it uses.

If you can't remember the last time your coolant was changed, check your maintenance records and see what your vehicle manufacturer recommends.

🔍 LOOK FOR LEAKS

Hoses, the radiator, water pump, thermostat housing, reservoir and connections can all develop leaks.

A small coolant leak can become a big problem when the coolant level gets too low.

👃 SMELL ANTIFREEZE INSIDE YOUR CAR?

A sweet coolant smell coming through the vents can be a warning sign of a leaking heater core.

You may also notice:

🪟 Windows fogging or icing up on the inside
💧 Damp or wet carpet inside the vehicle
🔥 Weak or inconsistent heat

Don't automatically assume inside window fogging or icing is just winter weather. Excess moisture in the cabin can have several causes, and a leaking heater core is one of them.

🌡️ WATCH YOUR TEMPERATURE

If the temperature gauge starts climbing, an overheating warning appears, or you see steam or lose coolant, don't ignore it.

An overheated engine can cause serious damage. Excessive heat can damage a head gasket and, in severe cases, warp or crack engine components. A failed head gasket can also allow coolant into the engine oil and cause major internal engine damage.

That's a lot more expensive than finding a cooling-system problem early.

🛞 FALL MAINTENANCE #4: TIRES & ALIGNMENT

Your tires are the only thing connecting your vehicle to the road. Fall is a good time to make sure they're ready for changing weather and road conditions.

Things worth checking include:

🛞 Tire tread: worn tread means less traction, especially on wet roads. Uneven wear can also point to other problems.

💨 Tire pressure: tire pressure changes with temperature. Driving on underinflated tires can affect handling, fuel economy and tire life.

🔍 Uneven tire wear: wearing more on one edge or in certain spots can be a sign of alignment, suspension or tire problems.

⚙️ Wheel alignment: a vehicle that pulls to one side, has an off-center steering wheel or wears tires unevenly may need an alignment.

🔄 Tire condition: cracks, bulges, damage and aging can all be reasons to have a tire inspected.

The good news is that catching uneven wear or alignment problems early can help extend tire life and prevent you from buying tires sooner than necessary.
