Step 1: Write down the year your child graduates high school.

Step 2: Count how many full tennis seasons are left before then.

Step 3: Write down the stage your child is in right now.

Step 4: Ask what stages still need to be built before college tennis.

Step 5: Spread those stages across the seasons you counted.

Step 6: Give each season one main job.

Ok, here's how this works.

Old model: hope the right things happen in time.

New model: count the time, and give each season a job.

The number of seasons is smaller than most families expect. Seeing it written down changes how you spend the next one.

Do not do this to add pressure. Do it so each season has a purpose and nothing important gets squeezed into the final year.

A stage that gets rushed late rarely holds up under pressure. A stage that is built on time usually does.

Step 1: Write down every practice session from last week. Lessons, drills, match play, fitness.

Step 2: Next to each one, write what it was trying to build.

Step 3: If you cannot tell, ask the coach. A good answer is one clear sentence.

Step 4: Circle the sessions that built the stage your child is working on now.

Step 5: Count the circles.

Step 6: Share the page with the coach and ask what they would change.

Ok, here's how this works.

Old model: stay busy and trust that hard work will add up.

New model: make sure each session is building what the current stage needs.

Hours alone do not move a player forward. Hours spent on the right stage do.

You do not need to be a coach to do this audit. You only need a pen, last week's calendar, and a willingness to ask what each session was for.

I wish every tennis family had a 90 day focus list.

Most families I meet have plenty of ideas. More power. Better backhand. More matches. Not one of them can say what the next 90 days are for.

The Hobson Tennis AI gives you that list. You answer a few questions about your child. In about 5 minutes you get their stage, the gaps behind it, and a focus plan for the next 90 days.

Built from 40 years of coaching, including my time as a National Coach, Davis Cup captain and Federation Cup coach.

$17.

Step 1: Write down everything you and the coach want to improve. Get it all on paper.

Step 2: Circle the one thing that, if it improved, would help the most other things.

Step 3: Write that one focus at the top of a clean page.

Step 4: Ask your child's coach to build most of the month's work around it.

Step 5: Each week, count how many sessions went toward it.

Step 6: At day 30, compare. Then pick the next one.

Ok, here's how this works.

Old model: fix ten things at once and feel busy.

New model: fix one thing well, then the next, in order.

Kids learn best when they know what they are working on this month. Parents sleep better too.

A long list can feel like progress. It is usually just a long list.

Step 1: List every tournament on this year's schedule.

Step 2: Next to each one, write the main skill it will test. Endurance, tactics, handling pressure, a certain surface.

Step 3: Ask whether your child has built that skill yet. Be honest.

Step 4: Mark every event where the answer is no.

Step 5: Swap one marked event for more training, or a lower pressure event that fits better.

Step 6: Review the list again at the start of each season.

Ok, here's how this works.

Old model: sign up for everything, because more matches must mean more progress.

New model: pick the events that fit the stage, and skip the ones that test what is not built yet.

A match your child is not ready for does not teach them. It teaches them to doubt.

In 40 years of coaching, including as a National Coach, Davis Cup captain and Federation Cup coach, I have seen the right schedule matter as much as the right lesson.

I wish every tennis parent were asked this first. What stage is your child in?

Most families plan by age. The 12s. The 14s. The 16s. But development does not follow birthdays.

Two kids born in the same month can be in very different places. One has the footwork and not the tactics. The other has the tactics and not the legs.

The Hobson Tennis AI finds the stage. In about 5 minutes it shows you the stage, the gaps behind it, and a focus plan for the next 90 days.

It comes from 40 years of coaching, including time as a National Coach, Davis Cup captain and Federation Cup coach. $17.
