In August 1970 (71 model year), VW shook up the lineup by introducing the Super Beetle (the 1302, followed by the curved-windshield 1303). It was the biggest engineering departure in Beetle history. By swapping out the traditional front torsion-bar suspension for modern MacPherson struts, they completely transformed the car’s handling and massively increased the front trunk space. Love them or hate them, the Supers marked a huge technological leap forward for the air-cooled family!
