History On Independent Oil
Hentges’ Family Owned Since 1935
Leo Hentges started Independent Oil in 1935. He then decided to take leave and start up his own business. That business was Canby Hatchery, which was later sold to Dr. M. Two years later he got the opportunity to acquire the International Harvester Franchise. He also built the Canby sale barn at the fairgrounds at that time. During his
time at the implement business, he got into the petroleum business, adding gas pumps alongside the implement shop, and bulk tanks and trucks were also acquired. Leo later sold the implement business and the sale barn. This was the start of Independent Oil, as Leo began to lease land on the corner of Hwy 75 and 68. He also began to sell Olsmobiles. During World War II, with Olsmobiles given on a quota, he began to also sell Kaiser-Frasers and Jeeps. After he acquired a real estate license, he then sold his service station and auto business to his son Ralph. Ralph Hentges took over ownership in 1952. Ralph expanded the business and began to sell Pontiacs in 1956. Dave Hentges took over ownership in 1982. In 1985 Dave added propane to the business. He also continued with the sale of Oldsmobile and Pontiac until the day the GM stopped making them. In the mid 90’s, live bait and a variety of fishing tackle was added to the business. Tim Hentges took over ownership in 2015. In 2018, the old site of Independent Oil was demolished and a new building was built. The current store opened in August 2018. With this expansion, Tim added a variety of food and Tecos Tacos to the store. Four Generations makes Independent Oil the oldest continued family run business in Canby.
