At the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center near Florissant, guided walking tours introduce you to wolves, coyotes, and foxes living in big wooded enclosures, along with each animal's story and the conservation work behind it. Want a side of Cañon City most visitors miss? The Museum of Colorado Prisons sits inside the former Women's Correctional Facility, built in 1935, right next to the Territorial prison that has operated since 1871. Walk through real cells filled with more than 140 years of Colorado prison history: the 1929 and 1947 riots, the old gas chamber, and famous inmates like Alferd Packer. Looking for the best view in Cañon City? Skyline Drive is a narrow, one-way paved road along a razorback ridge right above town, with drops of hundreds of feet on both sides and big views of the Arkansas River valley. Sixty prison inmates built it in 1905, and near the top, signs point out dinosaur tracks in the rock. Tip: it's for passenger cars only, so leave the RV or trailer at camp, and go early for soft morning light. The entrance is off US-50, about 15 minutes from Mountain View RV Resort.
