Here in Connecticut, the first snow forecast has a way of getting everyone thinking about their tires at the exact same time.

We’re wrapping up our Fall Car Care Month series with some of the things that can be easy to overlook when the weather is mild.

Your heat and defrost need to do more than keep you comfortable. A properly working defroster helps clear moisture, frost, and ice from the windshield so you can see clearly when temperatures drop.

Under the hood, fluids, belts, and hoses also become increasingly important. Colder temperatures can make weaknesses in these components more noticeable.

This is why we include these areas in preventive maintenance. Understanding their condition before winter gives you time to take care of what your vehicle needs rather than discovering a problem on a cold morning.

The next few colder months can be difficult for families who are already stretching their budgets. In our community, that can mean having to worry about something as basic as keeping the heat on.

National Teen Driver Safety Week is about helping newer drivers build habits that will stay with them long after they get their license.

If you have a teen driver at home, make vehicle awareness part of what you teach them. Show them the difference between a warning light they need to act on right away and one they need to tell you about. Teach them how to check tire pressure and what a low tire might look or feel like. Encourage them to speak up if the vehicle starts making a new noise, vibrating, pulling, or simply feels different than it normally does.

And have a plan together for what they should do when something doesn’t seem right. Who should they call? Where should they safely pull over? When should they stop driving instead of trying to make it home?

They won’t always have you in the passenger seat. Helping them understand the vehicle they’re responsible for is another way to prepare them for that independence. 💙

For our third Fall Car Care Month topic, we’re focusing on battery health and what colder temperatures can tell you about its condition.

A battery can start your vehicle without any noticeable trouble all summer and still be losing strength. Once temperatures begin to drop, starting the engine requires more from the battery. That extra demand can make an already weakened battery much more noticeable.

You might notice slower cranking when you start the vehicle, but sometimes there isn’t much warning at all. That’s why battery testing is a useful part of preventive maintenance. It gives us information about the battery’s condition before a cold morning is the thing that tells you there’s a problem.

It doesn't take long for a rodent to turn your engine compartment into a nesting spot.
As the weather changes, rodents are often looking for a warm, protected place to hide. Unfortunately, the space under your hood checks all the boxes. Along with nesting materials like this, they can chew through wiring, damage sensors, and create expensive electrical problems before you even realize they're there.

If you've noticed a strange smell, or you see signs of rodents around your home or garage, it's worth taking a look under the hood before a small problem becomes a much bigger repair.
