What months are deer crashes more common?

‘Tis the season!

Iowa ranks among top ten states for animal-vehicle collisions.

In a typical year, Iowa drivers report thousands of vehicle collisions with deer. It seems that any season is deer season and because of their increased activity, deer-vehicle accidents happen all year long. Evening and dawn are the most likely times for deer- vehicle collisions.

According to Iowa DOT, the number of deer-vehicle accidents in Iowa and around the country has steadily increased. While deer season seems to be year-round nowadays, the greatest risk for deer-vehicle collisions is between October and March due to mating season. Historically, the first week of November is when we record the highest number of crashes between vehicles and deer. If you look at crash statistics in Iowa, the most active two weeks for vehicle/animal crashes begins Nov. 2. Most of those animals are deer. Peak accident periods were from sunset to 4 hours after sunset and from 2 hours before sunrise to sunrise (their meal times). HOWEVER, Spring and Fall tend to be the worst times of the year, but October and November are particular high risk for deer collisions.

Iowa drivers know they need to be watchful for deer at all times of the year, but it’s especially important to be vigilant during fawning season, spring/summer.

And, even when you have done your best to keep an eye out for deer and other animals, but you still collide with one, trust your repairs to Otting Collision & Auto, LLC. You'll be glad you did!

Here we are - in National Independent Retailers Week. This year it falls during July 19-25, as it is always the third week of July with 21st in it.)

So, why shop small/shop local?

Here is what it does for you and for your community...

Economic Impact:
* Higher Recirculation: Studies show that independent businesses recirculate roughly 50% to 70% of revenue back into the local economy.
* Job Creation: Small businesses are the largest employers in the U.S., and owners are more likely to hire workers from the immediate area.
* Local Sourcing: Local shops buy services (like accounting, printing, and maintenance) from other local entities, strengthening the regional business ecosystem.

Community Connection:
* Civic Support: Small business owners donate approximately 250% more to local non-profits, charities, and community events than large chain retailers.
* Preserving Character: Patronizing mom-and-pop shops and local boutiques prevents urban sprawl, maintaining the unique, one-of-a-kind feel of your town.

Personalized Experience:
* Unique Selection: Local boutiques and artisans offer highly distinctive, handmade, or regionally sourced products that you won't find in mass retail.
* Tailored Customer Service: Shop owners and employees are deeply knowledgeable about their crafts and often provide superior, personalized customer care.
