This weekend we drove about 2.5 hours across Ohio to Jesse Owens State Park. I booked Site 31 at the Big Muskie Campground without knowing much about the park or its campgrounds; I was simply looking for a full‑hookup site. The park has five campgrounds, so choose carefully

Big Muskie is brand new and tucked back in the woods. It’s named after the Big Muskie dragline coal excavator that once worked the surface mine here. The excavator’s bucket—and “big” is an understatement—sits in Miners Park not far from the campground.

Our site was about half a mile from the camp store. Most sites are excellent, but many have a steep uphill grade immediately off the asphalt pad, so it’s worth studying the reservation photos closely. I was surprised by how many pull‑through sites there are. Every site in this campground is full hookup.

The closest town is McConnellsville, 14 miles away. There’s a Kroger—easily the oldest and smallest Kroger I’ve ever been in—and a Save A Lot for groceries. For pizza, Maxwell’s Pizza and Rooftop Patio is very good, and they even have an outdoor stage. Tractor Supply sits just north of town, and there’s a small hardware store downtown. I didn’t go in, so I can’t speak to how well‑stocked it is.

Cell service, for T‑Mobile and AT&T: nothing. My Starlink app (I don’t have Starlink, just the app) showed “BAD” because of the dense tree cover. Surprisingly, the campground’s free WiFi—CampfireConnect—is quite good. WiFi towers appear every five or six sites.

The highlight of the park has to be the ten new cabins. They’re inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, around 900 square feet, sleep six, and include AC, electricity, a full kitchen, and a bathroom. They’re beautiful. Out of curiosity, I checked availability for Thanksgiving—no luck. There is a YouTube video about the new cabins.

About 30 minutes away by backcountry roads is Blue Rock State Park. It has two cabins and a non‑electric campground, plus a lake for swimming and fishing.

Across the road from Jesse Owens is the Appalachian Hills Wildlife Area and Visitor Center. It’s worth a stop. They maintain an American bison herd that roams the prairie around the center. — at Jesse Owens State Park.

Hi from Punderson State Park. Our 10‑day, three‑park swing through Northeast Ohio has officially brought us to Punderson, the second stop after Findley and before Pymatuning. It’s a quiet, wooded retreat tucked into rolling Amish country, full of quirks worth knowing before you roll in.

Our campsite, Site 27, sits across from the water treatment plant, but it’s surprisingly peaceful. The site is a full‑hookup, level cement pad with a generous grassy area and a wooded backdrop. You’re only a stone’s throw from the lake, though the trees keep the view mostly hidden. If you’re planning a stay here, choose your site carefully. Many of the pads drop off sharply right outside the camper door, and some sites even have the picnic table placed on the opposite side because of the grade.

Punderson is just eight miles from Middlefield, which proudly claims to sit in the middle of the fourth‑largest Amish community in the world. Expect horses and buggies on the road and a slower pace all around. Middlefield’s Walmart has the saddest meat selection I’ve ever seen in a Walmart, but the Aldi 100 yards away has a much better spread.

Our first‑night tradition is simple: local pizza. Google insisted Zeppe’s Tavern and Pizza was the best around. It was not. Truly, it was not. But the place has a lively energy and looks like it probably serves a solid burger.

The park’s lodge, Punderson Manor, is a historic Tudor‑style building that feels like it wandered out of a storybook. Inside, you’ll find a small bar and a cozy dining room, perfect for a rainy evening or a break from camp cooking.

The campground staff, hosts, and volunteers have all been warm and welcoming. And keep an eye out for a whitish cat who stands perfectly still like a lawn ornament. He is very real, very handsome, and apparently the unofficial mascot of the campground.

Few things p**s me off more than seeing an RV with 2 feet of grass growing under it or one at an RV storage facility with 3 years of parking lot dirt on it. If you are one of these use it, sell it, or give it away.
Then there is the guy that has a for sale sign on a 27 year old RV, he wants $70K for an RV that blue books for $38K hasn’t used it in 4 years, but would rather pay over $300 a quarter to store it and let it rot instead of selling it for what it is worth.

Shameful plug. If your tanks smell and your sensors read full all the time, it just might be time to hydrojet clean those tanks. We do that.

Do RV gray and black tanks really need to be sanitized? In this epi...

If you have a tankless water heater, it will not light, and shows an Error code,?I’m going to save you some $$$, time, and aggravation. Look for a component that looks like this that has a tiny button on it, that is the Emergency Cutoff Thermostat. Press the button.

We got here Thursday at 2:30 pm and was greeted by James the Camper Host, real nice guy, he pointed out the potable water right next to his site and 15’ in front of me. DUH! The dump station is on the left side of the road as you leave, near the campground exit. Got set up and realized we forgot the dog’s food, so off I went into Circleville to Rural King and to search for pizza. Pizza Cottage was in the same parking lot as Rural King and the clerk recommended it. She wasn’t wrong.
Friday after a breakfast of omelettes we drove to Buckeye Lake State Park for a stamp in my wife’s passport book. 50 minute drive through the country side. Side note I bought a 5 # LP tank for my Coleman stove, game changer, no more 1 # green cans and much cheaper. No campground at Buckeye Lake, but have lunch at Pappy D’s Island House.
A.W. Marion campground: small, 61 sites, half electricity , half no electricity, no full hookups. It looks like all paved sites. There is a brand new bath and shower house between sites 51 and 49 that DNR hasn’t put on their website. I didn’t see another. Right behind the shower house is the trail head for a half mile trail. My watch said .6. Our site was fairly level front to back and 2.5” low on the passenger side. The big problem is the 8” drop from the pavement to the grass at the site. Old folks and children be careful. I can’t understand why DNR can’t load up some soil and a Bobcat and level this out. Also, the 3’ hole where last year’s fire pit was is right in the wrong place. We’ve been here 24 hour and I have stepped down into it twice.
All the sites have nice trees offering nice shade. However, take care to pick your site carefully. Some sites have trees which will make backing in a challenge and there are trees on some sites that will be in the way of slides.
That’s it for now. I give this campground 3 campfires. 🔥🔥🔥
