Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup, 2026 Heather Storm Award Winner, John Taylor!

John's father purchased this Mustang and campaigned it in NHRA drag racing events. John still has a Polaroid photograph of his father launching the car from the starting line when the NHRA raced in Amarillo, Texas. In 1977, his father recorded an impressive pass of 11.79 seconds at 117.49 mph.

In 1979, he reluctantly sold the Mustang to make the down payment on a house. Although the car was gone, he never forgot it. In 2005, after tracking it down in Iowa using the original VIN, he drove there unannounced and asked the owner if he still had the car. When the owner confirmed he did, John's father asked to see it. Impressed by its exceptional condition, he told the owner to name his price because he wasn't leaving without it.

After purchasing the Mustang, he brought it back to Texas, where he lovingly cared for it and proudly displayed it at car shows until his passing in 2017.

Today, John proudly continues his father's legacy with this remarkable Mustang. It is a rare 1968½ R-Code Mustang, factory-equipped with the legendary 428 Cobra Jet engine—one of the most desirable and collectible Mustangs ever built.

Have you ever heard someone say that:

"It's just a Mustang."

To someone outside the hobby, it may seem like just another car. Four wheels, an engine, and a Ford badge. But those who make that statement are missing something much bigger than the vehicle itself.

A Mustang isn't just transportation. It represents memories, friendships, traditions, and a passion that has connected people for more than six decades.

For many owners, their love of Mustangs began long before they were old enough to drive. They grew up admiring them in magazines, building model cars, drawing them in school notebooks, or watching one pull into the driveway. Some inherited their passion from parents or grandparents. Others worked for years to buy the Mustang they had dreamed about since childhood.

When Mustang owners gather at a car show, they aren't simply comparing horsepower or paint jobs. They're sharing stories.

They talk about the road trips that covered thousands of miles, the late nights spent restoring a project car, the memories of parents who owned Mustangs years ago, and the children or grandchildren who now share that same excitement. Every scratch, modification, and restoration tells part of that story.

The Mustang community is unlike many others. Owners gladly help strangers troubleshoot mechanical problems, lend tools, track down rare parts, or spend an entire weekend helping someone finish a restoration. Rivalries disappear when another Mustang owner needs a hand.

Car shows become family reunions. Annual events become traditions. Friends who met because of a shared love for Mustangs often remain lifelong friends. Some have celebrated weddings together, mourned losses together, and watched each other's children grow up.

The car is simply what brought them together.

The Mustang itself also represents something unique in automotive history. Since 1964½, every generation has inspired new enthusiasts while honoring its heritage. Whether someone owns a concours-restored classic, a daily-driven Fox Body, a supercharged Shelby, an S197, an S550, or the newest generation, every Mustang owner shares a connection to the same legacy.

People who say, "It's just a Mustang," often see only the sheet metal.

Mustang enthusiasts see the first car they ever fell in love with. They see countless weekends in the garage, unforgettable road trips, friendships built over decades, and a community that welcomes newcomers with open arms.

So no—it isn't just a Mustang.

It's history.

It's family.

It's friendships.

It's pride.

It's memories.

It's a lifestyle.

And once you've experienced the Mustang culture, you'll understand that the car was a key part, but the people are the most important.
