This is why you don’t use nails, random pins, or hardware store junk in steering and suspension.

What you’re looking at is a castellated nut that’s supposed to be secured with a proper cotter pin and instead someone shoved a nail through it….

From a mechanic’s standpoint, this is dangerous for a few reasons. A nail is not hardened like a proper cotter pin. It’s not designed for shear load. It doesn’t flex correctly and it can snap or back out from vibration. If that nail fails, the nut can loosen. If the nut backs off, you’re looking at a potential ball joint or tie rod separation. That’s not a “make it home” situation. That’s a lose a wheel, lose steering, or lose control situation. Steering and suspension components are not the place for shortcuts. They hold your vehicle on the road and keep your family safe. Saving fifty cents on the correct cotter pin isn’t worth risking a catastrophic failure at highway speed
