The Sportster. The Harley that even Harley weirdos look down upon.

Imagine buying into a lifestyle built around rugged individualism, only to discover you bought the wrong rugged individualism and now the other rugged individuals won’t let you be all rugged and individualistic with them.

Harley people love calling the Sportster a “girl’s bike.” Usually this comes from a man who is a couple more buffet dinners away from having bigger t**s than his wife and about two years shy of a knee replacement after decades of stabilizing the combined weight of himself and his overstuffed bike. His bike has a windshield, heated grips, a stereo, luggage, and a seat that looks like it came off a mobility scooter. Nothing says masculinity like explaining that your motorcycle has more storage compartments. Is that where you store your sense of self worth?

Or, they call the Sportster a starter bike. Right. You ride it until you’re ready for the responsibility of owning a motorcycle with much higher payments. Someday, if you work hard and believe in yourself, you too can spend as much as a decent mid size car to end up with a cumbersome bike you'll only ride three months out of the year.

The Sportster owner has committed a terrible offense. He bought just enough motorcycle. That’s dangerous thinking in Harley circles. Enough motorcycle? What the f**k does that even mean? How are strangers supposed to know you’re doing well after the divorce? You’re supposed to trade up. There’s a hierarchy. First you get the Sportster. Then something bigger. Then something with bags. Then something with a fairing. Eventually you achieve full spiritual enlightenment astride a two wheeled sectional sofa named the Ultra Limited Grand Imperial Road Mortgage or something, and you spend the rest of your life telling younger riders their bikes aren’t real Harleys. Congratulations. You have become the final boss of the dealership apparel section.

And God help the Sportster owner who actually likes his Sportster. "Real" Harley owners always asking... “When are you getting a real bike?”

As soon as you discover a second f**king topic? The man can’t stop for gas without receiving an unsolicited performance review from someone dressed like a substitute drummer for a band that only plays dive bars.

“Yeah, I had one of those before I moved up.”

Fascinating. I had a tricycle before I got a bicycle, but I don’t drive past preschools lecturing random kids about my vehicular journey. I hope you're not doing that either. The court told you you're not supposed to be within 500 of a school, much less actually on the premesis.

Then there’s the engine size interrogation. Is that an 883 or a 1200? Careful. Your answer determines whether he treats you like an apprentice outlaw or a scared little girl who wandered into the wrong showroom. Either way, he’s about to explain what you should have bought, using the authoritative tone of a man whose entire financial strategy is “they approved me.”

Meanwhile, the Sportster owner is just trying to ride his f**king motorcycle. Remember that? Riding motorcycles? Before it became this weird leather daddy HOA?

The funniest part is that the Sportster still gets all the outside world consequences of being a Harley. Your neighbors still assume you're a do**he. You bought the brand. You bought the noise. You bought the T-shirt. And the cult you supposedly joined still treat you like you like a narc. The Harley-Davidson Sportster. For the man who wants to disappoint both people who hate Harleys and people who own them. Honestly? That’s a remarkable amount of irritating people for one motorcycle.

This is why the Sportster is the only Harley I respect. I'll still never own one.
