It’s been another hectic week of owning a business-running nonstop like usual, going through the motions, trying to keep everything moving like always. And in the middle of the chaos, here comes a job that made me quickly realize that there was more meaning here than just turning wrenches. I had to stop, step back for a moment, and really think about what this truck really represents.
Most will just see it as another piece of equipment-but it’s not. It’s so much more than just steel, hoses, and pumps- this truck carries the weight of a commitment few are willing to make. Every call they answer reflects the sacrifice, courage, and dedication of the men and women who volunteer their time to serve their community. The late nights, missed meals, rushed goodbyes, and the quiet decision to show up when everyone else is running the other way. All to help someone they may not even know or ever see again in their life.
And for many departments, these trucks carry something much deeper- they carry the memory of those who once rode in them, answered those same calls, and are no longer here with us. Their legacy doesn’t stop when they’re gone. It stays with the truck, and it continues to roll out on every call.
Over time, I’ve come to feel like some of these vehicles speak to me in their own way. Like they will almost tell you their story if you slow down and pay attention. Then a bond starts to form between you and the vehicle-like it wants you to understand what it’s been through and what it’s still expected to do. That’s why I try to put everything I have into these repairs, because it’s never about fixing something broken-it’s about honoring what it represents and making sure it can continue its purpose and carry on the legacy of those that once operated them.
At this shop we don’t just work on rolling pieces of metal. A lot of what comes through here carries meaning, history, and sentiment. Behind many of these vehicles is a story, and behind that story are people who mattered. I’m glad this truck was able to remind me of that.
It was an honor to play a small part in making sure this truck is ready for when it’s needed most.
