Fun Shipping Container FACT
Q- Does grain get shipped in shipping containers going overseas? If so how it it done?
A-Yes, absolutely. A significant and growing amount of grain, especially specialty grains, identity-preserved (non-GMO, organic) crops, animal feed (like DDGS), and food-grade soybeans, is shipped overseas inside standard shipping containers.
Dry Bulk Container Liners: A massive, food-grade polyethylene or polypropylene bag (a "liner") is hung inside a standard 20 ft or 40 ft container. It covers all four walls, floor, and ceiling, turning the container into a clean, sealed.
Belt Throwers / Grain Slingers: A high-speed conveyor belt shoots grain through a small loading sleeve at the top of the rear liner door, packing the container completely from back to front.
A 20-foot container hits the maximum allowable highway/ocean payload weight (around 42,000–48,000 lbs) before running out of volumetric space.
Loading a 40-footer with loose grain would quickly make the container illegally heavy for road and port transport.
Unloading. Tipping Chassis: The container is mounted on a dump truck style tipping trailer.
