We Are Beginning to Haul Boats and Prepare Our Yard in Preparation for a Possible Hurricane Strike
With our forecasting services calling for a 20+% chance of a direct landfall on Cape Cod this weekend, we have to err on the side of caution and prepare for Lee. Hurricanes are, by nature, unpredictable and can change quickly in course and intensity. While a storm that fizzles out may be an inconvenience, we will prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
We know from historical experience that tidal surge can cause serious damage to boats and property, even in a harbor as protected as ours. Add to that the tremendous strain on docks and pilings caused by the windage of boats in slips. For these reasons, Kingman Yacht Center requires that all boats docked at slips be evacuated in the event of a hurricane threat. Boats on moorings should be prepared as outlined in the link below and left on their moorings.
With just days to haul 200+ boats, it is likely that we won't get to everyone before the weekend. We will start with the most vulnerable areas out front and slips 1-18, and work our way into the more protected back basin. Please be assured that, if we don't get to haul your boat, we will do everything we can to help you protect it from damage. Realizing that responsibility for the safety of your boat is yours alone, if you have other plans for your boat it would be best if you would move it from the marina as quickly as possible and let us know of your plans to do so. Feel free to call us with questions at (508) 563-7136. Heidi (X110), Sophie (X136) and Geoff (X125) are standing by to help.
While some customers might complain when a hurricane loses steam or changes direction after we call for a mobilization, those of you who have lived through hurricanes in New England know how highly unpredictable these storms can be. Kingman Yacht Center management has determined that this storm poses a significant threat to our harbor, and we require an evacuation of the marina. At risk are our facilities and property, and your boating investment of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Thank you for your help and cooperation. We're all hoping that this is for naught.
