Sometimes a broken vehicle requires repairs to be done in stages to reach the final outcome, it is kinda like a choose your own adventure book. Our job, as professionals, is to choose the right adventure that leads to a winning story.
This poor Lexus came in on the tow truck and it has overheated. We found a leaking water pump and a damaged radiator from the overheat condition. Part of our extensive cooling system evaluation is to check for a damaged head gasket or internal engine damage prior to starting repairs.
We used the traditional “blue juice” looking for combustion gases in the cooling system and that test passed. This test is not fool proof, so on this car because the repairs were very involved, we wanted to take it a step further and use an oscilloscope with a pressure wave sensor to see if there was any spikes in system pressure, indicating a blown head gasket. This SUV passed that test and now we can confidently move forward with the big repairs to get the Lexus back on the road.
Technology is very cool and the training is out there to learn how to use tooling like this. These things not only make a better repair facility, but it makes you more accurate and faster.
