The black border and fading dots around a car windscreen are functional parts of the glass. Known as the ceramic frit band and dot matrix, they are created by applying ceramic enamel to the glass and firing it during manufacture.

The opaque border conceals the bonding area and shields the polyurethane adhesive from sunlight and ultraviolet degradation, helping the windscreen remain securely attached. Because the black enamel absorbs more heat than the transparent glass, the gradually shrinking dots also create a smoother temperature transition. This helps reduce thermal stress and the optical distortion known as lensing.
