On January 22, 1912, 82-year-old Henry Flagler rode the first train into Key West and finished what people called the Eighth Wonder of the World.

His Overseas Railroad ran roughly 128 miles from the mainland across open water, concrete viaducts, and mangrove islands. Construction started in 1905 after the Panama Canal plans made Key West look like a future trade hub. Workers fought hurricanes (one in 1906 killed about 100 men when a quarterboat washed out to sea), heat, mosquitoes, and logistics that had never been tried at that scale. The price was about $50 million—well over a billion in today’s money.

The line brought mail, ice, doctors, and tourists on a schedule. Long Key even got a fishing camp that drew writers like Zane Grey. Daily service reached Knights Key (near today’s Marathon) by 1908; the full run to Key West opened with Flagler aboard.

It lasted 23 years. On September 2, 1935, the Labor Day Hurricane—the most intense storm to hit the U.S. at landfall, with a recorded pressure of 26.35 inches—destroyed about 40 miles of track and killed hundreds, including many World War I veterans building the parallel highway. The railroad never ran again. The state bought the right-of-way, widened the bridges, and opened the Overseas Highway in 1938. The road you drive to Key West still rides Flagler’s bones.

The railroad that went to sea became the road that still does.
