Here is a summer safety topic that does not get enough attention: the carbon monoxide your exhaust system is designed to keep away from you. Every time your engine runs, it produces gases that must be carried safely out the tailpipe, and your exhaust is the sealed pathway that does it. When a leak develops, from a rusted pipe, a cracked weld, or a failing joint, some of those gases can escape early, and in summer, with windows up, the odds of them reaching the cabin go up. The warning signs are a louder or different exhaust note, a ticking or hissing that changes with engine speed, or any smell of fumes inside. If you notice any of those, do not wait. Mechanic Monday: Here is a question our mechanic gets a lot, why is my fuel economy worse in summer? On an aftermarket or aging exhaust, two culprits stand out. First, a clogged or failing catalytic converter restricts flow and makes the engine work harder. Second, a bad oxygen sensor feeds the computer wrong data, so it adds too much fuel.
