*From the Mind of Rob: Apparently, We're Champions Now. *
So, funny story. A year ago, at the 2025 American Road Race of Champions, I received the final sign-off on my SCCA competition license. Essentially, someone decided I was sufficiently competent to race wheel-to-wheel with other humans. A questionable decision, but here we are.
That same weekend was also the first points race of the 2026 SARRC season. Fast forward one year, and *FasterSkunk Racing is your 2026 SARRC B-Spec Divisional Champion. *
In a Honda Fit. A car designed to transport groceries and people who make significantly better financial decisions than I do.
I've already shared my complicated feelings about how the championship played out. But here's the thing. *We didn't win by beating any one person, in one race, on one track. We won with strategy, consistency, an understanding of the rules, and apparently, Microsoft Excel. * Which is hilarious considering how much money I've spent trying to make cars go faster.
But this post is really about the people.
*Amy*, who continues to tolerate an operation where "I have an idea" should probably trigger an emergency response protocol. She's been there through the logistics, the chaos, and everything in between. None of this happens without her.
*Blair Deffenbaugh*, who's shared his knowledge, encouragement, and enthusiasm for this ridiculous little B-Spec adventure.
And *Justin Deffenbaugh*, who's taught me that the smallest details can make the biggest differences, especially in spec racing. From driving to technical preparation to understanding the rules, he's helped me recognize things I didn't even know to look for. He's also reminded me that even working an event is an opportunity to learn, observe, and understand what's possible.
To everyone who keeps pushing me on track, challenging me, coaching me, and helping me become a better racer, thank you. *I don't just want trophies. I want to get better.*
And to the SCCA officials, volunteers, corner workers, organizers, and everyone who's turned a wrench or supported FasterSkunk Racing, thank you for making this possible.
Here's what keeps rattling around in my head. A year ago, I was getting my competition license signed off. Today, I'm a divisional champion. That doesn't mean I've mastered wheel-to-wheel racing. I've learned just enough to understand how much I still don't know.
And sometimes, in the constant pursuit of what's next, I forget to appreciate what we've already accomplished. So I'm doing that now.
*One year. One Honda Fit. One divisional championship. And a whole lot of people who made it possible.*
Not a bad return on a truly terrible financial investment.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to figure out what the FitShow needs for the ARRC to start the whole thing over in just a short two weeks!
