🚗 Merging onto the freeway isn’t about forcing your way into traffic—it’s about preparing before you get there.

One of the biggest mistakes new drivers make is entering the freeway too slowly or waiting until the last second to find a gap. Use the entire on-ramp to build speed, check your mirrors and blind spot, signal early, and merge smoothly with the flow of traffic.

A confident merge is a safe merge.

🚦 Want to anticipate when a light is about to change?

One simple clue is the pedestrian countdown signal. If you see it counting down, there’s a good chance the traffic light will turn yellow once the countdown ends.

The best drivers don’t just react—they anticipate what’s coming next.

🚦 Just because your light turns green doesn’t mean it’s safe to go.

One of the best defensive driving habits you can develop is taking a quick left → right → left scan before entering the intersection. Those extra seconds could prevent a serious collision with a red-light runner.

Unfortunately, this is especially important here in the Valley. Phoenix has consistently ranked among the nation’s worst cities for red-light-running fatalities, which is why we teach our students to never assume an intersection is clear just because they have a green light.

The best drivers don’t just follow the rules—they anticipate that others might not.

💬 Do you already check both ways before driving through a green light?

With the rain forecasted this weekend in Arizona here are some tips for wet and rainy road driving!! 🌧️

When the roads are wet:
🚗 Increase your following distance to at least 6 seconds.
👀 Raise your vision and look farther down the road.
🐢 Slow down and make smooth steering, braking, and acceleration inputs.
🧼 Make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition before the rain starts.

One of the biggest dangers in wet conditions is hydroplaning, which happens when your tires lose contact with the road and ride on a layer of water.

💧 Pay attention to the ruts in the roadway. Over time, traffic wears grooves into the pavement, and these low spots collect water during a storm. Whenever it’s safe to do so, avoid driving directly in those ruts to reduce your chances of hydroplaning.

If your vehicle does begin to hydroplane:
• Stay calm—don’t slam on the brakes.
• Ease off the accelerator.
• Keep the steering wheel pointed where you want to go and avoid sudden steering corrections.
• Once your tires regain traction, continue driving smoothly.

The best drivers don’t just react to the weather—they adjust their driving before it becomes a problem.

💬 What’s your go-to tip for driving safely in the rain?

🚦 Ever wonder where your point of no return is when a traffic light turns yellow?

A good rule of thumb is to use the three dotted lane markings before the intersection. If you’re at or past that point when the light turns yellow, you can typically continue safely through the intersection. If you’re before it, you generally have enough distance to make a smooth, controlled stop before the light turns red.

The key is to anticipate the light, avoid last-second decisions, and never speed up just to “beat the yellow.”

💬 Have you ever heard of the “point of no return” before?

Before you put the car in gear, make sure you’re properly fitted to it. 🚗

Your seat position affects your control, comfort, and ability to react quickly.

✔️ Close enough to fully depress the pedals
✔️ Seatback positioned so you’re not leaning too far back
✔️ At 9 & 3, you should be able to turn the wheel without your shoulders coming off the seat
✔️ Remove excess slack from the lap portion of your seat belt

Taking a few extra seconds to get properly positioned can make a big difference behind the wheel.

Get comfortable. Get positioned. Then drive.

↩️ Making a left turn? Set yourself up for success before you ever turn the wheel.

At NControl, we teach students to:

👀 Watch for pedestrians
🚗 Scan for oncoming traffic
↩️ Position toward the left side of your lane for a better view
🛑 Avoid pulling too far into the intersection before you have a safe gap
➡️ Finish the turn by entering the correct lane—don’t swing wide

And remember: if you hesitate, wait. If a gap doesn’t feel comfortable, don’t force it. It’s always better to wait for a larger, safer gap than to push your luck.

Good left turns are all about visibility, positioning, and timing.

Dead battery? Here’s how to safely jump start your car. 🔋🚗

Knowing how to jump-start a car is one of those skills every driver should have, but there are a few important things to remember beyond just connecting the cables.

🔴 Positive first: Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery, then the positive terminal of the good battery.

⚫ Negative last: Connect the black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the good battery, then connect to the negative terminal of the dead battery. You can also connect negative cable to a clean unpainted metal grounding point on the vehicle.

Before you start:
• Make sure both vehicles are turned off and in Park/Neutral with the parking brakes set.
• Make sure the vehicles aren’t touching.
• Turn off lights, radios, A/C, and other accessories.
• Check the battery and cables for damage before connecting anything.
• Keep the cables away from belts, fans, and other moving engine parts.
• Never attempt to jump a battery that is cracked, leaking, swollen, or otherwise damaged.

Once everything is connected, start the vehicle with the good battery and let it run for a few minutes. The amount of time needed can vary depending on how discharged the other battery is.

If the dead vehicle starts, leave both vehicles running while you disconnect the cables in the reverse order you connected them. Be careful not to let the clamps touch each other or any moving parts.

And remember: a jump-start gets you back on the road, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the battery is healthy. If your battery keeps dying, have the battery and charging system checked.
