When the Jaguar XJ40 arrived in 1986, it marked one of the most important departures in Jaguar’s history.

After years of development, it replaced the Series III with a car that was fundamentally more modern. New platform, new electronics, and a completely rethought approach to refinement and packaging.
At its core was the AJ6 straight-six, an engine designed for smoother delivery, improved efficiency, and long-distance durability. It gave the XJ40 a more contemporary character while retaining the quiet, effortless performance expected of a Jaguar saloon.

The engineering focus went deeper than many realised. Digital instrumentation, onboard diagnostics, and advanced electrical systems were introduced at a level Jaguar had not attempted before. It was a clear move toward a more technology-led future.

This was not just progress for the sake of it. The XJ40 improved structural rigidity, interior space, and ride consistency, while still maintaining the balance between comfort and control that defined the XJ line.

What often gets overlooked is how significant the XJ40 was in shaping what followed. It laid the groundwork for the X300 that refined it, and ultimately for the modern Jaguars that came after.
Today, the best XJ40s are not the ones that have been hidden away. They are the ones that have been properly maintained, where the engineering still works as intended and the car delivers the quiet competence it was designed for.

When the Jaguar XJS V12 Le Mans arrived in 1988, it marked a quiet celebration of Jaguar’s return to the top of endurance racing.

Following victory at Le Mans that year, Jaguar released a limited-run XJS that reflected that success. Not through radical redesign, but through subtle changes that elevated what was already a highly capable grand tourer.

At its core was the 5.3 litre V12, an engine defined by smoothness and sustained performance rather than outright aggression. It delivered power in a constant, effortless flow, exactly as intended for long-distance driving at speed.

The Le Mans edition built on that foundation. Revised suspension, unique alloy wheels, and distinctive badging set it apart, but the real appeal was in what it represented. A road car connected, however quietly, to Jaguar’s racing success at the highest level.

Like all XJS models, it was engineered for distance. Stable at speed, composed over long journeys, and designed to cover ground without strain. The V12 suited this character perfectly, offering refinement that few engines of the era could match.

What often gets overlooked is how rare these cars are, and how specific their place is within the XJS lineage. They were never intended as showpieces, but as usable grand tourers with a direct link to a defining moment in Jaguar’s history.

Today, the best examples are the ones that have been properly maintained, where the V12 still delivers its signature smoothness and the car continues to perform as it was designed to.

Jaguars never seem to skimp on luxury.

Going for a more simplistic approach, this old 2+2 advertisement boasts of a leather
interior, promising an elevated experience for the driver, co-pilot, and any additional
passengers in that coveted rear row. Originally found in an old copy of: The Autocar, an issue published in 1966.

Not something every sports car of the era could claim.

When the XJ6 arrived in 1968, it quietly reset what a luxury saloon was supposed to be.

Jaguar spent more time engineering the parts you couldn’t see than the ones you could. The rear suspension was derived from racing practice, using inboard brakes to reduce unsprung weight and keep the car stable at sustained high speed. The XK engine was already proven in endurance competition, tuned here not for drama, but for longevity at motorway pace.

Early XJ6s were expected to cover huge distances, fast, in silence. Many were bought by people who drove them every day, hard, and for years. That’s why originality matters so much now. Survivors weren’t pampered. They earned it.

Today, the best XJ6s aren’t the loudest or the rarest. They’re the ones that still feel right at speed.
A proper Jaguar saloon was never about being seen. It was about getting there, again and again.

This article was from the October 1954 issue of The Autocar. It features the new Jaguar in town, the Jaguar XK140, diving into the car’s upgrades and design changes, such as rack and pinion steering and a more powerful engine.

At a time when Jaguar was refining an already successful formula, the XK140 marked a clear step forward. More usable, more responsive, and designed with real drivers in mind.
Part of the ad reads:

"Now features on the fixed-head coupé include rack and minion steering, increased engine performance, and modified bulkhead permitting more forward seating so that an adult or two children can be carried in the rear. The luggage locker has been modified, and access to the spare wheel is now via a trap-door in the luggage compartment. Substantial over-riders are fitted on the bumpers."

It is a snapshot of how Jaguar evolved the XK line. Not just chasing performance, but improving comfort, practicality, and everyday usability without losing the character that made the car so desirable in the first place.

When the E-Type Series 1 arrived in 1961, it didn’t just turn heads. It forced the entire industry to catch up.

Jaguar carried over what it had learned at Le Mans. A monocoque tub, a tubular front subframe, and fully independent suspension all round. The same thinking that kept D-Types stable at 150 mph was now on the road, available to anyone who could afford one.

The XK engine was nothing new by then, but in the E-Type it found its balance. Strong, durable, and capable of sustained high speed without complaint. Early cars were capable of 150 mph, but what mattered was how effortlessly they held speed over distance.

Disc brakes came as standard. Aerodynamics were shaped in the wind, not just on paper. Even the bonnet, that long, uninterrupted line, hinged forward as a single piece. Everything had a purpose.
Early Series 1 cars were not built to be collectibles. They were driven. Hard. Across countries, across continents. That’s why truly correct examples stand apart today. Not over-restored. Not over-finished. Just right.
