Reminder: Scammers use fear, emotion, and urgency to take advantage of unsuspecting victims.
We’ve received reports of scammers calling residents while pretending to be law enforcement. The caller may claim you missed jury duty, have a warrant, or must make an immediate payment to avoid arrest. Additionally, we have heard of scammers calling people recently released from jail demanding a payment to avoid probation, a tether, and even get charges removed from their record.
Law enforcement will never call and demand payment, ask for gift cards, cryptocurrency, or payment through apps.
If you receive a call like this, even with a number that appears correct, hang up immediately and do not provide any personal or financial information. If you’re unsure whether a call is legitimate, contact the agency directly using a verified phone number.
