🤢 This is exactly why routine service matters.

What you're looking at is a transmission cooler that was opened up during a routine service—and it's easy to see why we're always preaching preventative maintenance.

Years of marine growth, debris, and buildup had slowly restricted the cooling passages. The transmission was still operating, but every hour on the water with reduced cooling puts additional stress on one of the most expensive components in your drivetrain.

The scary part? There may have been no obvious symptoms yet. No alarms. No warning lights. Just a cooler that was becoming less effective every time the boat left the dock.

That's why routine service is so valuable. It gives us the opportunity to catch problems like this before they lead to overheating, premature wear, or costly transmission repairs.

⚓ Don't wait for an alarm to tell you something's wrong.

A transmission cooler can't do its job if it can't move water efficiently. Keeping it clean is one of the simplest ways to protect your transmission and extend its life.

This cooler got the attention it desperately needed—and that's one less surprise waiting for this owner out on the water. 🔧

🎥From pieces on the shop floor to pushing water again.

If you’ve been following along, this is the Cummins QSC we tore down after excessive blow-by led us to a worn #1 cylinder and a full rebuild.

After diagnosing, disassembling, machining, cleaning, measuring, and carefully putting everything back together, today was the part we’ve been waiting for:

⚓ Sea trial day.

There’s nothing quite like hearing an engine come back to life and then watching it do what it was built to do out on the water. Oil pressure stayed where it should, temperatures were right on target, and this QSC ran strong through the entire test.

This is why we take the time to do things the right way. A proper rebuild isn’t just about making an engine run again—it’s about making it run reliably.

Huge shoutout to the crew for bringing this one all the way from excessive crankcase pressure to a successful sea trial. 👏🔧

🔧 Progress update on the Cummins QSC rebuild!

A few posts ago, we showed you the beginning stages of this project after excessive blow-by led us to a worn #1 cylinder and the decision to tear the engine down for repairs.

Now, after a lot of cleaning, measuring, inspecting, and replacing worn components, this Cummins QSC is finally starting to look like an engine again.

This stage of a rebuild is where all the hard work begins to pay off. Parts are going back together, clearances have been checked, components have been inspected, and the engine is steadily making its way toward being ready for startup.

It's easy to focus on the finished product, but successful rebuilds are won in the details. Taking the time to do things correctly, verify specifications, and inspect every critical component is what separates a quality rebuild from a temporary fix.

⚓ This engine came into the shop with a problem.

⚓ It's leaving with a solution.

The crew is making great progress, and before long we'll be moving into the final stages of assembly and testing.

Stay tuned—this Cummins QSC is getting closer every day to doing what it was built to do: pushing a boat across the water instead of sitting in pieces on a shop floor. 💪🔧

🔧 The guys are elbow-deep in a rebuild, and this one's a perfect example of why it's important to pay attention when your engine starts showing signs of trouble.

The culprit? **Excessive blow-by.**

In layman's terms, blow-by happens when combustion gases sneak past the piston rings and pressurize the crankcase. A little is normal. A lot is not.

After diagnosing the issue, we found the root cause: **a worn #1 cylinder**. The wear allowed excessive pressure to build in the crankcase, creating symptoms that told us it was time to dig deeper.

At this point, there's no magic additive or quick fix. The right repair is to tear it down, inspect the components, and rebuild it properly.

This is the part most people never get to see. The engine room is covered in tools, parts are coming off, measurements are being taken, and the guys are working through the process one step at a time to bring this engine back to life.

⚓ We'll be taking you along for the ride over the next several posts as this rebuild progresses.

For now, here's a look at the beginning stages of a project that's already keeping the crew busy.

Stay tuned—this one is going to be a good one. 👀🔧

💪 Fresh power and a little preventative maintenance.

Kiyo is showing off a beautiful pair of MAN V8s pushing 1,200 horsepower, but even brand-new engines need attention after their break-in period.

Many owners are surprised to learn that manufacturers require specific services early in an engine's life. These aren't optional recommendations—they're designed to ensure your engines continue performing exactly as intended for years to come.

For this visit, we completed the required valve adjustments and oil service, along with diagnosing and correcting a few alarm issues. These early maintenance intervals allow technicians to verify everything is operating properly, make critical adjustments, and catch small concerns before they become larger problems.

⚓ Proper break-in service helps protect your investment.
⚓ It promotes long-term reliability and performance.
⚓ And it helps ensure those 1,200 horses are ready whenever you push the throttles forward.

A little maintenance now goes a long way toward a longer, healthier life for your engines.

A few posts ago, we showed you the condition of the transmission coolers on this boat and why regular maintenance matters.

Now it's time for the finished product. ✅

This 1,000-hour service is officially complete, including a new injector on the port CAT C9, cooler service, inspections, and all the maintenance needed to keep this vessel running reliably for many more hours on the water.

The best maintenance jobs aren't always the flashy ones. They're the jobs that address the issues you can see—and the ones you can't. Catching problems early, replacing worn components before they fail, and making sure everything is operating exactly as it should.

A big shoutout to Nash for getting this one wrapped up and ready to get back where it belongs: out on the water instead of in the engine room. 🔧⚓

When it comes to marine diesels, reliability isn't luck—it's the result of proper maintenance, thorough inspections, and technicians who care about doing the job right.

Another one serviced, tested, and ready for the season.

06/22/2026

👀 Out of sight, out of mind... until it isn't.

This transmission cooler from a CAT C9 came in desperately needing attention. Just take a look at the amount of debris buildup that had accumulated over countless hours on the water.

Marine growth, shell fragments, weeds, and other debris don't take much time to start restricting water flow. As the cooler becomes clogged, its ability to remove heat from the transmission decreases, forcing components to operate at higher temperatures than intended.

The scary part? Most owners never know there's a problem until alarms start sounding, temperatures begin climbing, or expensive transmission repairs become necessary.

This is exactly why routine cooler inspections and cleanings are so important. What looks like a little debris on the outside can have a major impact on performance and reliability.

⚓ Preventive maintenance isn't just about changing filters and fluids.

⚓ It's about inspecting the components that quietly do their job year after year.

⚓ And it's about catching problems before they leave you stranded or facing a repair bill that could have been avoided.

This cooler was definitely overdue for service—but fortunately, we got to it before it became a much bigger problem.

If you can't remember the last time your transmission cooler was inspected, there's a good chance it's time. 🔧

There's something satisfying about seeing a Cummins QSC back where it belongs—clean, serviced, and ready to go.

A 1,000-hour service isn't just about checking boxes. It's about protecting your investment, catching issues before they become failures, and making sure your time on the water is spent cruising instead of calling for a tow.

The glamour shots are nice, but what you're really looking at is hours of maintenance, inspections, adjustments, and attention to detail that most people never see.

When the engine room looks this good, it's because a lot of work happened before the camera came out. 🔧⚓

Maintenance isn't an expense—it's the cheapest insurance your engine will ever have.
