Some people need beach vacations. Some people need a backyard, a folding chair, and a can of Peanut Patch.

We're not here to judge.

This Alabama bridge is proof that the best views sometimes require a little courage (and a good grip on the railing).

Alabama Life
"The natural rock bridge beside the falls is one of only a handful in the state, and geologists believe it formed the same way the potholes did, with grit and swirling water slowly boring through the sandstone."

High Falls Park sits just outside Grove Oak in DeKalb County, and most folks drive right past the turnoff without ever knowing it is there. Town Creek spills over a wide sandstone shelf, then fans out across bare rock in a sheet of water that can stretch three hundred feet across after a good rain.

What makes it special is what the water has done to the stone over thousands of years. Deep round potholes are drilled straight into the bedrock, and there is a natural rock bridge arching over the creek at the edge of the falls, carved by nothing but patience and current.

In summer the flow drops and the flat rock turns into a place where families wade and children hunt for crawfish in the shallows. In winter it roars. Same falls, two completely different rivers.

That is Alabama for you. The best places are rarely the ones on the billboard.
