We are proud to introduce Fresh Meadows Farm - our newest organic cranberry producer and a fifth-generation Black-owned farm in Carver, MA.

Fresh Meadows has an especially deep connection to the cranberry dry harvest in Massachusetts. As they tell it: "Cranberries, one of three native North American fruits, were handpicked by Native Americans and the early settlers for centuries. With the escalation of commercial production during the latter part of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century, came an increasing demand for migrant labor. These opportunities played a large role in shaping the early geographical patterns of the Cape Verdean emigration. The ancestral heritage of Fresh Meadows Farm is directly tied to the labor demands created by this rapidly expanding cranberry industry, (more specifically the cranberry dry harvest!)"

Dom Fernandes’ grandfather John Alves was one of those workers. A first-generation Cape Verdean immigrant, he began constructing the Fresh Meadows cranberry bogs in 1945. Dom now farms that same land using traditional dry-harvesting techniques and growing heirloom varieties: Early Black and Howe. Unlike the bulk wet-harvested cranberries used for processing, Fresh Meadows harvests incrementally to deliver the cranberries at their peak.

As Dom puts it: Cape Verdeans grew this industry in Massachusetts and Fresh Meadows is keeping the tradition going. Find their fresh cranberries on the list now!

We couldn't celebrate National Co-op Month without highlighting one of our long time customers: the Park Slope Food Coop!

In 1973, ten Brooklynites co-founded the PSFC out of the second floor of a community center with no elevator. Today, they are the largest member-owned and operated food cooperative in the US. With over 17,000 members (most of whom work a 2¾ hour shift every six weeks in exchange for access to the store) they achieve prices 20-40% below neighborhood alternatives.

Over 200 varieties of produce, a long commitment to organic and local sourcing, and more than 50 years of proving that this kind of cooperation is possible. We’ve been proud to bring Northeast farms to their shelves for years. Happy Co-op Month to the whole PSFC community!

Last week Annie attended Meeting in the Middle - an event hosted by Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources bringing together more than 80 grant recipients and food system partners from across Massachusetts for the first time.

Together, the three MDAR grant programs that brought everyone together (FSIG, RFSI, and the Massachusetts Food Ventures Program) have invested $142 million over the past decade in Massachusetts’ local food supply chain. That’s a lot of infrastructure, but as MDAR put it, building a resilient food system takes relationships.

Thank you to MDAR, Branchfood, and Cambridge Econometrics for making it happen and to the farmers, food hubs, processors, distributors, and food access organizations all working toward a more connected and resilient food system. Here’s to it being just the beginning!

The sales team (Nanook and Fern), warehouse (Idgie), and purchasing team (Tilly and Elmer) all agree - we love Kettlebones 🐾

Made with locally sourced and preservative-free ingredients we have varieties ranging from Apple-y Ever After to Pumpkin Parm, Salmon to Love, and variety packs too. Find them on the list before we get carried away!

Up next for National Co-op Month is one of our newer customers: Rutland Area Food Co-op! 🚚
Rutland Area Food Co-op is in downtown Rutland, VT and stewarded by member-owners who believe that “keeping food dollars in the community builds something worth investing in, one shared harvest at a time.” Everyone’s welcome to shop, no membership required, and just last year they celebrated 30 years in business! We love playing a role in their work and seeing so many of our favorite Vermont producers on their shelves!

Did you catch Scott Farm Orchard in this week's NYT Cooking? Heirloom apples are getting their moment in the spotlight and Erin Robinson is the tour guide we all deserve: “When you see a variety that has been around since the 1500s, you have to remember that it’s because someone cared enough to keep it going.”

Although Hidden Rose (also called Mountain Rose) isn't so old, it has a devoted following that has grown its footprint since the 1950s. Pink on the inside with a bright, sweet, strawberry lemonade flavor it's a rare gem! They hold their color fresh, baked, and dry. These move fast!

There's only one organic cream cheese made in our region... and it's on the list! Carleton Yoder of Champlain Valley Creamery has been handcrafting organic cheese in Middlebury, VT since 2003. Before cheese, he studied food science and got into fermentation by making w**e and hard c***r.

For all of his cheeses, milk comes from a single herd of 100% grass-fed Jersey and Holstein cows at Severy Farm down the road. The cream cheese is made from cultured fresh organic milk and cream without stabilizers or preservatives and the result is both creamy and tangy with no shortcuts. Even better... Carleton's creamery in a net-zero solar-powered facility 🌞

October is National Co-op Month and we love an opportunity to shout out Fiddleheads Food Co-op!

Fiddleheads is New London's only downtown grocery store. They're community owned by more than 4,000 households across southeastern Connecticut - in fact, they've had so much support from their community that they've almost reached their current limit of owner shares! As Hadley puts it: "Shoutout to Kourtney and Jules! They work really hard to bring in produce from 90+ local farms and they have such a great relationship with their community."

Local ownership, local sourcing, local relationships. We love being a part of their work!
