If you drive a Jeep, Dodge, or Chrysler with a V6, this one's worth knowing about.

A lot of these vehicles — Jeep Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler 200/300, and more — share the same 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine. And one of the most common issues we see on this engine is a leaking oil filter housing gasket.

Here's what that looks like once we get into it: oil pooling right in the valley of the engine, sitting near critical components. Left unaddressed, this isn't just a "small leak" — it can lead to bigger problems and a real mess under the hood.

Snapped in half. That's what a "transmission problem" turned out to be this time.

A 2014 Honda Accord came in towed — the customer heard a noise and couldn't get the car into Park, and was understandably worried it was the transmission. When we got underneath it, we found the right front axle shaft snapped clean in half. This is a known, common failure point on these cars.

A broken axle can absolutely cause exactly these symptoms — clunking, grinding noise, and issues with Park engagement — because the axle plays a role in how the wheel hub and driveline interact. It doesn't always mean the transmission itself is bad.
We're replacing the axle now. Once it's back together, we'll test drive and confirm the transmission is operating the way it should before calling this one fully resolved.

Moral of the story: a scary noise and a Park issue don't automatically mean a transmission replacement. Get it looked at first — the fix might be a lot more contained than you'd expect.

Another customer came in convinced it was a transmission problem. It wasn't.

A 2006 Subaru Outback 3.0R (L.L. Bean Edition, AWD) came in with the car not wanting to go into Park, and a strange shift feel between 2nd and 3rd gear. The customer had recently done a DIY axle replacement, but told us the issue was actually happening before that work was done.

We started where we always start — scanned for codes. Nothing stored in the transmission. Test drove it ourselves and confirmed what the customer described: it wasn't shifting or engaging Park the way it should.

A full inspection turned up the real problem: the right front axle wasn't fully seated into the transaxle. We pulled it, inspected it and the differential for damage (none found), cleaned some minor scuffing, reinstalled it correctly, and refilled the front differential fluid.

Test drove it again — driving exactly as it should. No transmission replacement. No new axles needed. Just a self-install that wasn't fully seated, corrected properly.

This is exactly why we scan and test-drive before ever recommending transmission work. Sometimes the real fix is a lot simpler — and a lot less expensive — than the fear.

Another shop told this customer it was probably the transmission. It wasn't.
A 2012 Nissan Versa came in with a check engine light, and the customer had already been told elsewhere it might be a transmission problem. We pulled the code: P0101, mass air flow sensor performance.
When we got into it, we found an aftermarket MAF sensor from a previous repair that wasn't seated or sealed correctly, a cracked and rotted air intake hose, and a damaged air box. All of it was letting unmetered air into the engine — which can absolutely feel like a transmission issue from the driver's seat.
We replaced the air box top, the hose, and the MAF sensor, then cleaned the throttle body. Code cleared.
But once the engine started getting accurate air readings for the first time in a while, a misfire on cylinder #3 showed up that had been masked by the bad fueling data. We swapped a coil between cylinders and the misfire followed it to #4 — confirming a failing ignition coil. The spark plugs are original and worn too.
The customer approved the coil replacement for now, and we'll be recommending the spark plugs next. This is a good reminder: fixing one problem correctly sometimes reveals another one that was hiding underneath it. That's not a sign something went wrong — it's a sign the diagnosis was right.
Not everything that feels like a transmission problem is a transmission problem. That's why we test before we guess.

🔋 "It won't start" doesn't always mean "new battery."
A customer's 2014 Chrysler Town & Country came in with a no-start concern. The easy move would've been to slap in a new battery and send them on their way — but that's not how we work.
We tested it first. Result: classified "replace soon," not dead.
So instead of an automatic replacement, we reconditioned it on our battery service equipment and retested:
✅ State of Charge: 90%
✅ Rated 800 CCA — retested at 690 CCA
✅ Starter tested normal (11.67V starting voltage, 0.58 sec crank time)
✅ Charging system tested normal (14.17V unloaded, 14.10V under load)
Final verdict: "Good & Recharge." No replacement needed — we recommended a retest in about 90 days, sooner if any starting concerns come back.
That's one less unnecessary part on the bill. We test before we guess, and we replace only what actually needs replacing.

🐾 This is what we found on a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan this week.

An unknown animal chewed through the engine cover foam — likely using it for nesting material. What was left behind got pulled into the HVAC system and completely clogged the cabin air filter. Leaves, foam debris, seeds — all of it. The photo labels tell the story.

Two separate problems. One animal.

Here's the thing — this kind of damage happens more than most people realize, especially to vehicles that sit outside or in driveways. Animals are attracted to the warmth of an engine bay and the soft foam materials they find there. Most drivers have no idea until they notice their A/C isn't blowing as strong as it used to, or until we find it during a service visit.

A clogged cabin air filter doesn't just affect air quality inside the vehicle — it forces your HVAC blower motor to work harder, which can shorten its life. And chewed wiring or foam can lead to bigger electrical or mechanical problems if left unaddressed.

🚗 The average vehicle on U.S. roads is now about 13 years old — a historic high, up 10% from just a decade ago.

These three odometers tell that story right here in our shop:

📍 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe — 262,207 miles
📍 2012 Toyota Camry — 256,060 miles

⚙️ Ever wonder why a transmission rebuild costs what it does?

These two photos tell that story better than any number could.

The first photo shows a 6L80 transmission removed from a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 — valve body exposed, contaminated fluid pooled underneath. This transmission failed. The second photo shows every single internal component laid out on the bench before the rebuild begins.

Look at that second photo carefully. Every one of those parts — clutch packs, planetary gearsets, bearings, seals, the valve body — has to be removed, cleaned, inspected, measured, and either replaced or reinstalled to exact specifications. Then the whole thing goes back together in the right order, with the right tolerances, and gets tested before it ever goes back in the vehicle.

This is not a simple job. It requires:

🔧 A technician with years of specialized transmission training
🔧 Specialized tools that most shops don't have
🔧 A clean, controlled environment to prevent contamination during reassembly
🔧 Quality parts — seals, clutches, bands, and hard parts as needed
🔧 Fluid, a filter, and final testing

The cost of a transmission rebuild varies significantly depending on the vehicle, the transmission type, and the extent of the damage. What doesn't vary is what's involved in doing it right.
