Running diagnostics is always the first step to any job at Merchant Automotive; and using the test port to check the vacuum on the fuel system is one of the initial diags for a pump no-start. This LML that Dennis is working on had a plug on the test port. To be as thorough as possible, we need access to this port. Testing and diag is crucial - Joe tells us why it's always best to fix a problem instead of plug it and hope it goes away.

There's a reason we recommend regular maintenance on serpentine belt drive systems. Eric shows off these idler and tensioner pulleys that are failure prone when not looked after. If they fail, your belt will come off causing major repercussions to components like your air compressor, power steering, and alternator. One bolt is all it takes to remove and replace these pulleys. Prevent major disaster by always doing the routine maintenance.

A little rubber seal seems insignificant and is easy to forget. In this case, Eric talks about how important this seal is on your brake calipers. Without it, dirt and debris clog up the caliper bolt bore; eventually leading to a seized caliper that prevents it from doing its job. All you 2011-2019 Duramax owners especially, look at your calipers. If you don't have these seals or they're in poor condition, you need to make sure you have them!

Would you guess this Duramax is 25 years old? Normally when we get a call about an LB7, we prepare for a truck that's been through it all and needs lots of repairs. In this case, Dennis was pleasantly surprised to see how good a condition this Duramax was in. All this customer needed was a routine inspection and an oil change. A Duramax from 2001 still going strong and looking as good as ever. Take good care of your truck and you may still have it 25 years later!

Anyone who's had an LB7 may be familiar with this hole in the intercooler piping. On the driver's side near the power steering line sits this intercooler pipe. If the ducts are not aligned correctly on either side, this pipe becomes shifted into a slightly wrong spot and begins to rub.
Eric points out the easy way to avoid this: Use the hash marks the way they're intended and line them up properly. It's so simple that it may be overlooked unintentionally, but ignoring this is not a risk that's willing to take.

This transmission from an LB7 that Dennis worked on 10 years ago came back in to us. This customer has had over 100 drag race passes with this truck on this trans. Joe was thrillled to see how good a condition everything was still in after a decade of drag racing.
Although it's finally time for an upgrade, 10 years out of this trans with that much stress put on it over the years is impressive. We set high expectations for ourselves on any truck we work on; we love to hear and see stories like this! How long have you been on your current transmission?
