Flashback Friday!
I went to Japan in 1989 on a teaching program JET Program USA It's a great opportunity to challenge and develop yourself by living in a foreign country. I was afraid since I couldn't speak or read the language well...in those days there was no internet or cell phone. It took about three months to feel comfortable.
I was assigned to teach in Saitama and lived in Ageo city. My first year I taught at 21 different public schools in Urawa, Omiya, Inaminami, Ageo, Kitamoto, Kounosu, Kita-Kounosu, Kumagaya. I stayed on the program for two years then found a job with the U.S. Dept of Defense in Tokyo. I would drive two hours to Yokota AFB on weekends to go to the commissary in a '74 Mustang II my co-worker sold to me for $1. That Ford gave me stress. I just wanted a car and we could register it on base so it wasnt expensive. I would fill up gas at Hardy Barracks or Yokota. My dad would mail me parts via APO...I changed the water pump in a parking lot once and had to go back and forth lugging water via my bicycle. I ended up taking it to the junkyard and had to pay the guy a few hundred $ to take it. Good times.
I ended up staying in Japan for 6-1/2 years. I came back to Hawaii when the yen exchange was $1=¥89! I was getting paid in U.S.$ while employed by the DOD. The exchange rate was really different from the nowadays.
