With the warmer weather, expect to see more motorcycles and pedestrians out and about. Sharing the road is everyone’s responsibility. Consistently check your mirrors and blind spots, and slow down in areas with heavy foot traffic. Riders must ride smart and obey all traffic laws. Pedestrians should use crosswalks whenever possible and look up, not down at their phones.

Enjoy the weather 🌞 headed our way and stay alert to help keep everyone safe.

Snow Emergency Plans are now in effect in Calvert, Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's, St. Mary's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties. All vehicles parked along snow emergency routes must be moved or will be towed. This ensures first responders can operate safely and crews can restore safe travel conditions quickly.

Good Morning, ! Since the start of Winter Storm Fern, Maryland State Police have received nearly 1400 calls for service and responded to 84 crashes.

The message remains the same today as it was yesterday: avoid travel if possible. Snow and freezing temperatures have made for icy road conditions. If you absolutely have to travel - for your safety and the safety of emergency personnel:
- Clear ALL snow from your vehicle and headlights before driving. If you can’t see, you can’t drive!
- Alert someone to where you are going. Give yourself time to get there.
- Do not crowd the plow. Give them space to work.
- Remember, bridges, overpasses, and less frequently traveled roads will freeze first.

Snow emergency plans remain in effect statewide. Follow roads.maryland.gov for the latest road conditions and stay weather aware. Stay safe!

❄️🌬️Adverse weather conditions are on the forecast for Charles County this weekend, with snow, sleet, freezing rain and very cold temperatures which will make driving hazardous, if not impossible. It is best to avoid travel, but if you must go out, here are some reminders of how to keep yourself and other drivers safe:

⚠️ SLOW DOWN AND INCREASE YOUR DISTANCE. Allow 8-10 seconds between vehicles. Following too closely increases the chances that you may collide with a vehicle in front of you that has come to a sudden stop.

🚘 USE THE GAS AND BRAKE PEDALS GENTLY. Maintain traction and avoid sudden movements by using light pressure on the gas and brake pedals.

🧊 BEWARE OF BLACK ICE. It is thin and nearly invisible making it very dangerous for drivers. Again, be sure to take it slow.

⛔️ DON’T PASS THE PLOW. Let the snowplow clear the path for you to follow more safely.

Let’s each do our part to keep each other safe on the roads!

The Snow Emergency Plan for St. Mary's County will go into effect today, January 24, 2026, at 4pm. Once a snow emergency is declared, the law requires certain precautions. They include:

-Prohibited parking on roads and streets designated as snow emergency routes

-The use of snow tires/chains (most cars now use all weather tires, so changing to "snow" tires is unnecessary);

Updates will be posted when they become available.
