The first year as a shop foreman is the hardest one. It requires both technical depth and the ability to keep quality consistent across every repair that leaves the shop. Kyle has handled that well.

Tech Tip Tuesday: The Overdrive Unit

Overdrive is the gear ratio above direct drive. In most transmissions, fifth, sixth, seventh, and any higher gears are all overdrive ratios. The concept is straightforward. The transmission output turns faster than the engine input, so the engine can run at lower RPM while the vehicle cruises at highway speed.

Overdrive saves fuel and reduces engine wear. That is why nearly every modern vehicle uses it.

But overdrive has tradeoffs. At highway speeds, the torque converter is typically locked, which means the driveline is mechanically connected from engine to wheels. Any vibration, any load change, any rough road surface, transfers through that connection.

Overdrive-related problems show up as highway-speed symptoms. Shudder at cruising speed. Unexpected downshifting on grades. A pulsing sensation under steady throttle. Fuel economy that has quietly dropped without a clear explanation.

When overdrive components fail, the symptoms are specific. Slippage at highway speeds. Inability to reach or hold the highest gear. A transmission that hunts between gears without settling.

There is a number most drivers never see, and it is one of the most important ones in their vehicle right now.

Transmission fluid temperature.

Normal operating range for most automatic transmissions is 175 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit. At 220 degrees, fluid life is already cut in half compared to operating at 175. At 240, fluid begins to oxidize. At 260, seals start to harden. Above 270, internal damage accelerates.

A transmission sitting in July traffic can climb into the 230 to 250 range without the driver knowing.

The warning signs are behavioral. Delayed shifts. A vehicle that drops into a reduced-performance mode. A burning smell from under the hood. These are the transmission telling you something is wrong before it tells you louder.

If any of those appear during summer driving, pull over, let the vehicle cool, and have the transmission evaluated before driving further.

The Driveshaft

The driveshaft connects your transmission's output to the rear differential on rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles. It transfers rotational power across the length of the vehicle, often at high speeds and under significant load.

A driveshaft looks simple from the outside, but it operates under conditions most drivers never think about. It rotates thousands of times per minute, compensates for suspension movement through slip yokes, and absorbs torque pulses through universal joints or CV joints at each end.

Driveshaft problems produce distinct symptoms. A vibration that worsens with speed but goes away in neutral. A clunk when shifting from drive to reverse. A squeaking noise from under the vehicle that changes with vehicle speed.

Driveshaft failure is rarely sudden in passenger vehicles, but it is always progressive. A worn u-joint that gets ignored becomes a broken u-joint. A broken u-joint on the road becomes a driveshaft that separates from the vehicle, which can cause serious damage to the transmission case and the underside of the vehicle.

July 4th weekend is one of the heaviest travel periods of the year. Before you head out, five minutes of attention on your vehicle can prevent a much longer day on the side of the road.

✔️Check transmission fluid. On vehicles with a dipstick, the fluid should be red to light brown, not dark or burnt-smelling. Dark fluid before a long drive is a signal worth taking seriously.

✔️ Check your coolant level. Transmission coolers are usually integrated into the radiator. A cooling system running low on coolant is also running hot on transmission fluid.

✔️ Check tire pressure. Hot pavement on a fully loaded vehicle amplifies any existing tire issue.

If your vehicle has had any unusual shift behavior in the past few weeks and you have been putting off having it looked at, this week is the right time. Not the morning you are loading the car.

July is the hottest month of the year in Central Indiana, and for anyone operating a vehicle, that heat carries costs that are easy to overlook.

Transmission fluid has a working temperature range. Inside that range, it performs as designed. Above it, the chemistry starts to break down. Oxidation sets in. Varnish forms on internal surfaces. The fluid that was supposed to protect your transmission begins working against it.

Most vehicles do not have a transmission temperature gauge. Most drivers will not know there is a problem until a shift starts to feel different or a warning light comes on.

July is the right month to pay attention to small signals. A shift that takes a moment longer than it used to. A slight hesitation off the line in heavy traffic. A small drip on the driveway after a long drive.

These are early-stage indicators. They are worth addressing before July turns into August.

Tech Tip Tuesday: The Hydraulic Pump

The hydraulic pump is the heart of an automatic transmission. It generates the fluid pressure that operates every clutch pack, every band, and every shift in the transmission.

Mounted at the front of the transmission, the pump is driven directly by the engine through the torque converter. That means the pump is always running whenever the engine is running, whether the vehicle is moving or sitting in park.

The pump builds pressure by moving fluid from the pan, through the filter, and into the valve body where it gets directed to the components that need it. Proper pressure, at the right timing, is what makes smooth shifting possible.

When the pump begins to fail, the symptoms are consistent. Delayed engagement when shifting into drive or reverse, especially after the vehicle has been sitting. A whining noise from the transmission that changes with engine RPM. Slipping under load. In severe cases, the transmission loses the ability to shift at all.

Pump failure is one of the more serious transmission problems a vehicle can develop. It typically requires transmission removal and partial teardown to replace.

The most common contributor to premature pump wear is contaminated fluid. Changing transmission fluid at the manufacturer's recommended interval is the single most effective way to protect the pump.
