Tech Tip Tuesday: Line Pressure
Line pressure is the main hydraulic pressure inside an automatic transmission. It is what actuates every clutch pack, holds every band, and controls every shift. Without proper line pressure, the transmission cannot operate.
The pump generates line pressure. The valve body regulates it. The pressure control solenoid adjusts it in real time based on signals from the transmission control module.
Line pressure is not constant. It rises under heavy load, during hard acceleration, and in reverse. It falls during light-throttle cruising and low-load conditions.
When line pressure is wrong, the transmission protests. Pressure that is too low causes slippage, where engine RPM rises without a matching increase in vehicle speed. Pressure that is too high causes harsh, slamming shifts.
Diagnosing line pressure problems requires a pressure gauge and factory specifications across different operating conditions. A scan tool alone cannot tell you what is happening inside the hydraulic circuit.
