Tech Tip Tuesday: Fluid Exchange or Drain and Fill?

These services replace transmission fluid in different ways.

A drain and fill removes part of the old fluid through a drain plug or by removing the pan. If the pan comes off and the filter is serviceable, the filter can be replaced and the pan inspected.

A fluid exchange uses equipment connected to the transmission’s cooler circuit to replace a larger share of the fluid. It does not repair existing wear, and it may not include removing the pan or replacing the filter.

Neither service is automatically right for every vehicle. The correct choice depends on the manufacturer’s procedure, mileage, service history, fluid condition, and any symptoms the vehicle has.

We inspect the vehicle first, then recommend the service that fits it.

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 1. For many Central Indiana drivers, that means the Monday evening commute will suddenly happen after sunset.

A few checks now can make that transition easier:

✔️ Make sure both low beams and high beams work
✔️ Look at the headlight lenses. Cloudy or yellowed lenses can reduce useful light
✔️ Replace wiper blades that streak
✔️ Clean the inside of the windshield to reduce nighttime glare
✔️ Address any vehicle issue that makes you less confident after dark

The clock change is predictable, so there is time to prepare before the darker commute begins.

This week is National Teen Driver Safety Week.

For a newer driver, fall brings conditions they may not have handled before: wet leaves, earlier darkness, glare, fog, and the first slick mornings of the season.

A few conversations are worth having now:

✔️ Phones stay put while the vehicle is moving
✔️ Everyone wears a seat belt
✔️ Speed comes down when visibility or traction changes
✔️ Passengers should never become a distraction
✔️ Tired driving is not safe driving

It is also a good time to check the vehicle your teen drives. Tires, brakes, lights, wipers, and any change in the way it shifts or handles all deserve attention before winter.

Vehicle inspections are available at seven of our Central Indiana locations: edwardstransmissions.com.

Tech Tip Tuesday: Seals, Gaskets, and Cooler-Line Connections

A transmission relies on seals and gaskets to keep fluid where it belongs. Heat and age can harden those materials, and colder weather may make an existing weak spot easier to notice.

Watch for:

✔️ A new reddish or brown spot under the vehicle
✔️ Fluid residue around the transmission pan, axle seals, or cooler lines
✔️ A fluid level that keeps dropping
✔️ A burning smell from fluid reaching a hot surface

A small leak does not always mean a major repair. The important thing is finding the source before the fluid level becomes low enough to affect lubrication or hydraulic pressure.

If you have noticed a new spot in the driveway, let us take a look.

Today is National Do Not Disturb While Driving Day.

At 55 mph, a vehicle travels about 80 feet every second. A two-second glance at a notification covers roughly 160 feet without your full attention on the road.

Fall adds wet leaves, earlier sunsets, and changing visibility to the drive. This is a good time to let your phone handle the distraction for you.

iPhone users can turn on Driving Focus. Android phones offer similar driving-mode settings. Both can silence notifications automatically when you are on the road.

Set it once, let it turn on automatically, and keep your attention where it belongs.

Tech Tip Tuesday: Clutch Packs

Inside an automatic transmission, clutch packs use alternating friction and steel plates to hold different parts of the gearset. Hydraulic pressure applies the correct pack for each gear.

The friction material wears over time. If a clutch cannot hold firmly, it begins to slip. That slipping creates heat, and the extra heat can speed up the damage.

A driver may notice:

✔️Engine speed rising without the vehicle accelerating normally
✔️A delay before the vehicle responds to the throttle
✔️Soft or drawn-out shifts
✔️A burnt smell after driving

Those symptoms can have more than one cause, so diagnosis should come before a repair decision. Following the correct fluid-service schedule for your vehicle can help reduce heat and wear.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and shorter days make this a good time for a few reminders.

More evening driving now happens in low light. Windshield glare, a burned-out headlight, and a little extra speed can make someone walking or biking much harder to see.

Before your next drive:

✔️Check that both low beams are working
✔️Clean the inside and outside of the windshield
✔️Slow down in neighborhoods and near crosswalks
✔️Give yourself extra time to react at dusk
✔️Put the phone away before the vehicle moves

These are simple checks, but they make fall driving safer for everyone using the road.

Tech Tip Tuesday: What the Valve Body Does

The valve body directs pressurized fluid through an automatic transmission. Its passages, valves, and solenoids control when clutches apply, how firm a shift feels, and when the torque converter locks.

When something in the valve body is not working correctly, symptoms may come and go. You might notice a harsh shift one day, delayed engagement the next, or a gear that occasionally does not engage.

Possible causes include a sticking valve, a worn valve bore, a failed solenoid, wiring trouble, or debris in the fluid. Those problems can feel like internal transmission damage, which is why testing matters.

Some valve-body repairs can be completed without rebuilding the entire transmission. The first step is confirming where the problem is.
